Will RioCar display to LCD in-dash monitor? - 12/06/2002 20:29

I've got a Kenwood GPS system which displays on their KVT-m700 touchscreen 7" LCD display. The m700 also has video in as well as an AM/FM tuner.

I'm going to have a shop install the RioCar by slaving it to the m700 (i.e. utilizing its built in amp).

I know this is a longshot, but is there a way to use the LCD screen as a display for the Riocar?

Thanks for helping a newbie...

A while ago someone made a TV output device for the empeg. See here. I don't believe it allows you to use the menus, only shows what's currently playing. Nothing ever came of it, but with all the new LCD screens in cars I think there is a new demand for this sort of thing.

The easiest way is to use a computer to fetch the image from the empeg over http or ftp or some mechanism and do a tv-out to the display.

But if you're going to do an in-car computer, then why not go whole-hog with it and do the DVD player, MP3 playing, navigation, etc, all on the PC?

Cost. I bet you can get a DOS based ftp utility, and a tv-out board that can display an image file. *shrug*

don't know.... but this lil guy is pretty cool, NS GXm SBC with 200MHz Low power CPU ,Audio,VGA/LCD,Ethernet and TV-out.... and I'm pretty sure if ya call em they'll even put an embedded OS on it for you. Granted it's not a Ghz processor but if your running low level stuff it wouldn't make a difference... you can put a laptop drive or a regular 3.5 HD (need to have a 12 volt power source) but the board can run a laptop drive and only need a 5v power source.... purty slick . I used something similar for a mp3 solution before I got the Riocar, mine didn't have a TV out... but pics are on this post at the bottom. You could slap a hub in your car, connect the TV out to your LCD and control the Riocar via the http interface.... there would be the question of how to control it (mouse/keyboard) without making it look junky....
