Earphones - 29/01/2003 17:07

After an unfortunte meeting between a heavy closing door and one of my earphones I am looking for a new set. I tried glueing it back together but there's a popping noise coming from it :-(

They came with my '99 Samsung Yepp E-32 and were pretty nice actually - they have a nice rubber cover that keeps them in place very well and produce a decent sound.

I can't afford those posh ear-plug style ones mentioned a while back, but could pay up to £30/$50 I guess. Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Gareth

Check out the Koss headphone package on this page. I know Koss usually means crap, but these look good for $9.99. Too bad the deal is probably not valid at Tandy's.

I really want to check these out, but the lady at my Radio Shack always comes on to me. Trust me, this is not a good thing.

ya the mdr-ex70lp's are amazing. Most bang for your buck. the bass response is unreal in the little ear bud speakers and do a pretty good job of keeping outside noise out, even thou they are not noise canceling. I own 3 pairs of them and use the for everything.

Thanks for the recommendation - I checked the ebay price but got a set from unbeatable.co.uk - £28.50 all inclusive which is a pretty good price. After shipping it's about the same price, and should be here quicker even though they have to get a set shipped from Sony.

A tip about those Fontopias: Since they seal into your ears, your first instinct is to want to jam them in there uncomfortably. Don't do that, just choose the right gasket size and put them in gently. They should seal gently without needing to really jam them in.

i know that the point is moot, but I've had the Etymotic ER-6i earphones for 5 months now, and they beat the sonys hands down. Of course, it costs you twice as much, but I felt, and still feel that it was well worth the price.

The sony's are great, but don't be tempted by the noise cancelling version: They just don't cancel enough noise to make it worthwhile.

I've got a set of Noise Cancelling Sony's that I've had for nearly 6 years now. They are the folding ones that fit like earmuffs. The noise cancelling is great on airplanes. You end up playing at 2/3 the volume you'd normally play to drown out the engines. You can still hear them a bit, but the fact you are playing at a lower volume means less fatigue. What I don't like about them is that the folding parts have a creaky "plastic" noise at their hinges. So, if you move your head around, you can hear cheap plastic creaks. Maybe they've fixed this in the last 6 years. I notice that Crutchfield is still selling the same model number.

For situations other than a constant drone (car rides, flights, generators) they don't do much and may actually make noise louder if it can't lock into a consistant sound to cancel out. They are horrible in the wind too...

That's my one big problem with the Sony Fontopias, actually. Every time the cord rubs on my clothes, it's amplified through the 'phones. I'm sure it's a cans-and-string thing, but it's really loud.

I read this thinking "does she still work at radio shack?" and then looked at the date. I hope you can go to radio shack now rob.

I solved this by taking one of those clips for a handsfree headset and fastening it onto the headphone cord. I now clip the cord onto my collar behind my head. I did it to prevent myself from pulling them out of my ears inadvertently, and it has a nice side effect of eliminating all the cord noise from the points below the clip. Perhaps it makes me look like a dork, but that doesn't bother me too much.

My current headphoens:
Sure e3c's. I picked up a pair from Dell half off. Of course they were still $90. The make the EX-70LP's sound like a cheap pair included with some mp3 player. They're not worth $180 of my money, but they're sure nice to have.
