5V line on power supply to car amps - 11/04/2003 08:21

I have a friend who is dead set on building a computer in his car ( I can't sway him towards the empeg, but he got a 10.4" Touchscreen for $300 after shipping, oh well.) He wants to know if you can use the 5V DC line of a standard power supply to send the necessary signal to the amps to turn them on. Also, does anyone know of a good, but not so expensive way to get a DC-DC power supply?
Thanks in advance,
Justin

I suppose it's possible, depending on the amp, but they expect 12v.

Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking, would the 12V signal off of a free conector work in this case?
Thanks for the help guys.

Yes it will work off the +12v, I did that exact thing with my computer before my "Precious"

Use a simple relay and have the 5v turn it on and thus allowing a 12v feed to get turned on.
