Notice the very nice looking Triumph petrol tank and gauges, not to mention the goretex gloves...

With my unerring instinct to always buy an obsolete product, of course, I have a TomTomGo, which is not upgradeable: That traffic info link, looks to be the goods.
On the other hand, when I bought it then, the firm paid for it, If I bought it now, I pay for it!

From the stuff I have read the TomTom GO will be upgradable to the new software. You just won't get all the new funky hardware side of it.

Yea, But, Yea But, Yea But, I don't think that I'll be able to get the traffic info., because it needs a connection to your mobile, unless I've read it wrong!

Exactly. Firmware version 5.0 has just been announced at CeBIT and will add a LOT of functionality to the "classic" GO as well. Of course, the new models have more features, traffic being one of them, but there's still enough left for the classic GO too!

It's impossible to use the new TomTom PLUS product (basically an online service which, amongst others, provides real-time traffic info) with the "classic" GO, because the "classic" doesn't have a Bluetooth module which is required for this kind of stuff. The GO 300, 500 and 700 which were announced at CeBIT yesterday DO have that Bluetooth module.

So I'm sorry, but unless you upgrade your hardware, you're SOL.

Do you work for TomTom? If so, what took you guys so long to release the software-only version? I mean, how long does it take to rip the GPS receiver out?

Maybe they make more money on the GPS receiver than they do on the software...

Nope, sorry, can't help you there. If you want to know this, you'll have to ask someone who does work for TT. (and, who wants to talk about this sort of thing, which is -as I found out- pretty hard)

Re: New TomTom GPS - 17/03/2005 17:59

So lemme ask a dumb question...

When I first started looking into the Tom Tom Go, it seemed that it was mainly geared to be used in Europe. I now see that they have US maps too. My question is: Is the US implementation as kick ass as the European implementation seems to be???
