Are they available anywhere? 0.42 pre5 seems like the best candidate to play with if I'm going to modify anything.

If you get to playing around with it, maybe you'd be interested in adding FLAC and OGG capability for importing music?

Having none, well, not really.
I already have more projects than I have time for, but the soup sorting problem is really irksome.
And the dirty truth of it is I'm not a java programmer, either, so it's probably out of scope for me. I'm hoping what I want to do is going to be painless enough...

I'll put 42 + source up tonight when I get home ... The soup sorting problem is a pretty non-trivial fix. You'e certainly welcome to give it a shot -- good luck!
