Serial GPS reciever at RadioShack - 11/12/2002 22:45

Looks like a decent deal especially with the included software. Opinions?

Looks pretty nice... And according to this review it outputs NMEA, so it should be compatible with gpsapp.

Hmm...

Maybe I'll try to get one and try it out.

More is better, right?

Usually that's the case. I will call that number tomorrow and buy a couple. I imagine serial receivers becoming less common since more and more laptops don't have serial ports.

Rob, I love your "buy two of every gadget on the planet" philosophy.

Hmm. He's smarter than me. I get between 3 and 8 of everything, it seems. (He says, looking across his pile of extras)

Yeah, I seccond the approving of your buying strategy, but that's beside the point. Let us know how it looks when you get it. I want something that'll integrate well into my car and not stick out like a sore thumb. The whole cold boot satelite aquisition thing is important too. Perhaps I'll stop by The Shack while i'm doing my christmas shopping on christmas eve and check this out.

From looking at the pictures, and the description of the position resetting to 5 miles from the center of Tokyo, it doesn't look like it has a backup battery. So the reaquisition probably has the same difficulties as the earthmate/tripmate/streetfinder devices. Maybe it does use the AAA's for backup power when the external power is disconnected.

Yeah, but 70 seconds is nothing compared to 15 minutes like mine.

And besides, putting mine on permanent power and adding the no-cold-boot code to GPSapp has solved that problem.

'round these parts it takes 70 seconds just for ME to warm up before I drive anywhere, so that's not much of a problem.

Haven't gone to a Shack to check it out yet. The site says that it;s not available at the stores, but I imagines that's not very accurate.
