Hijack -- Get it while you can

Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 17:29

The sourgeforge.net site (which hosts Hijack) is changing the way things work, and only projects that use their "proper" release management system will continue to be hosted there in the long run.

I'm not interested in that, as it creates a lot more work for me. And as you all know by now, I'm supposedly an arrogant bastard who never does anything for this ungrateful crowd, so why should I start now.

Anyway, I'm not yanking it off there, just letting it die off slowly as they continue to disable parts that Hijack currently relies on.

Get it while you can, and if you want a better system, fix it yourselves.

I've just uploaded a current full snapshot of v428 to make getting your own copy easier. Why I did this, I have no idea.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

I am everytime surprised, when I get a new Hijack version for my Empeg... Thanks a lot!

Small problem: jEmplode can't detect your latest version. Using at the moment the second last version v427.

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 17:47

Note that this also applies to various other free empeg goodies that this pompous overlord has also never provided anyone here with, so grab those two since they're also hosted on the empeg site at sourceforge.net.
aniwrite, empsync, mp3tool, strace, and upgrader.

It seems that various other programs I've written are not there, so whereever they're stashed I guess they'll likely remain.

I also had a new builder image for HUGE drives that was about to be uploaded to there, but no more.

Mark, I'm sure that the vast majority of users on this BBS appreciate everything you've done with Hijack and the other uitls that you've made available to us. I know that I would not have been able to write my apps without your help and support in Hijack, and the Empeg is just plain better for your involvement. Not to mention eveyone with a cool home dock (and the Hijack support for that, too). Don't let a few users make you think you are not appreciated.

I second that, Mark you are very appreciated/respected here. Without your MANY MANY hours of hard work so much would not be possible with this wonderful little device. Please dont leave

Thanks for the v428 full snapshot. That's very handy for those of us using the ext3 features of your kernel. My build script was starting to get a little confusing.

Personally, I have always loved the extra goodness hijack gives me...but not only that, you have patiently answered my dumb technical requests and patiently corrected my assumptions....

So...if some small minority hasn't appreciated you, there are certainly enough of us who have

Thanks

My head is spinning- and I'm still new to the empeg world!
Surely this is not all in response to the one 'memory error' thread?

I just want to make my feelings clear: Mark Lord has done wonderful things for the empeg- many more than I currently know about. Helpful, friendly, rapid response to user's dilemmas are documented throughout this BBS.

Thank you, Mark, for all of your efforts!
Your time investment and interest in the empeg and this community have impressed me deeply, as have your skills with both hardware and software.

And having met you personally (although briefly) at the first Cincy meet, I must say you're a cool guy both on and offline. I never would have gotten into geocaching if not for Mark (and Russmeister).

Thanks for all you do for the community. I'd be happy to host your stuff for free if you'd like (I'd even give you root access if you wanted it.)

I'll AOL the above posted sentiments Mark - I've loved playing with the various goodies Hijack has provided and completely enjoy your dock which lets me wake up to my empeg every day as well as the lovely remote display for the Valentine1 which keeps my ass ticket-free (knock wood!) day in day out. You've put great tools in our hands and believe me, lots of us appreciate it! You're really quite irreplacable.

Mark, please read this again tomorrow (or whenever you cool down): I hope you will see how childish it is, totally at odds with your huge contribution to this community.

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 21:29

Bonzi: Take your flames elsewhere, please.

While the insults continue here and elsewhere, I've been spending the past couple of hours working out how to get Patrick's memory boards functioning on Mk2 hardware.

Not that I have any Mk2 hardware, so why should I bother -- I'll probably only get flamed for that too, I suppose.

But PCA is a nice guy in a tight spot, so look for Hijack v429 later tonight, with Mk2 + PCA_memory_board support.

I would certainly hope not. Even more, I hope that my original comments in that thread were not taken as an insult; I only wished to point out that a fairly new user was being dealt with, that he should be dealt with as such, and that it seemed (to me) he was being treated more harshly than the situation warranted.

I still believe what I said, but I think this situation, too, has gotten wildly out of hand, on all sides. I think it's pathetic that people have started calling Mark names.

Can everyone please just get a grip and put this all in perspective?

Mark: You have contributed amazing things to this community, and it has always seemed like people have made their appreciation clear. You were needlessly (IMO, and in the opinion of some others) hard on a user who asked for help. Big deal. And some users have insulted you. Again, big deal. Drakino didn't roll down the shutters and close the boards because d33zy was a prick, right? Please don't undo all the good you've done just because a few people have decided to call you names. If you insist though, I wish you the best, and it's been a pleasure, and thank you for all you did for the empeg community.

Those who called Mark names: How is calling someone names any better than being snippy in response for a request for help? Think about it, and think about what you have thanks to Mark.

I have to agree that this has been, in general, the best online community I've ever seen. But it has changed, even in the short time I've been around. Can we all just act like the adults we are and get over this, please?

Okay, I've sent Patrick a kernel to play with, and also dumped it out as Hijack v429. Man, that took hours longer than it ought to have. Another lost evening, I suppose.

If anyone is interested in helping out, please download it and let me know if it breaks your Mk1, Mk2, or Mk2a players. It would be handy to hear back here from at least one owner of each type of player as to whether it broke anything or not. Just regular stock players, no upgrades required (other than Hijack).

Hi Mark.

I havn't been around much lately, but I wanted to echo the sentiments about how admired you are here. It is not just respect and appreciation - it's more than that. You've not only "been there for us" like when you offer repair services and help with various quirks, you've also given us goodies that we never knew we needed until we've had them!

[censored], I could keep going on: I don't have to wait for 5 hours to do a sync because my player decides to do a hardware check, I can customize my boot logos, I can use nearly any remote to control my empeg too.

I hope that your hosting gets sorted out. I'm sure many of us here are willing to help out in any way.

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 22:55

I have installed HiJack v429 on both of my players. Both are MKIIa's one with ver 2.0 final and the other is v3a8. They both are running fine.
EDIT: jEmplode v68 BTW and no hacks other then empathic on v2 player

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 22:59

I just installed v429 via Jemplode and got this error.

I'm running a Mk2a, 21K mp3s, fidsift, 2.00 final dev, "set max fid" and no other hacks (empire disabled awaiting memory board.

Upon doing the upgrade a 2nd time. It worked just fine with no error message. But now my player is locked up... should I reboot or upgrade a 3rd time?

EDIT: Player was paused during the upgrade, and now I can't take it out of pause. No response from empegface or the front panel. Responds to ping and empegface is still showing screen. Hijack menu comes up. Hyperterminal output is blank, but I only started it after the lockup.

I am thinking of rebooting via Hijack, but the first warning (linked above) has me worried this might mess it up? Maybe I just had a sloppy upgrade due to low RAM (upgrades have taken two tries in the past with Jemplode, but I don't remember any lock ups)?

EDIT 2: Got impatient, realized how paranoid I was being and rebooted. Did it via Hyperterminal. All is well. Hopefully my memory board will ship soon!

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 23:13

Almost stock Mk2a player(Hijack installed), 48GB and 30GB HDs, just upgraded to 429, no problems installing through jemplode 69.00~1 here. No problems after it rebooted too.

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 23:19

v429 installed on my stock Mk2. Everything is shipshape and Bristol fashion. Installed fine through jEmplode v69 (running on Gentoo Linux), reboots, streams and plays as normal (well, it's not plugged into an amp at the minute, but the menus and visuals all work )

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 10/05/2005 23:51

Thanks Geoff. Good to know about the Mk2 working fine.

Now we just need to hear from a Mk1 owner to know that all is well.

Brad: even I sometimes have to cycle the power after a kernel upgrade from time to time.. never have figured out why.

Cheers

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 11/05/2005 00:52

Mark,
I, too, echo all the thanks and apprecatiion for all you have done for the community and answering my questions...if you were snippy with me, I guess i did not notice, as I ask for help and if the help includes a remark, so be it.
Anyway, you are welcome to put anything you want (yeah even that rock climbing pic) on my webstite. Don't know if that is what you need or want, but the offer is there. But I would suggest you take a deep breath and remember what Shakespear (I think) said..."Even the gods themselves, against stupidity, contended in vain." But I can relate...I, personally am having my own private pity party due to some people at work who seem to have a case of terminal cranius/retum inversion.... But, like bad beans, this too shall pass....
Again, my thanks for all the free advice, great docs, and willingness to work with me on a couple of issues!
Ladmo.

No flaming, and certainly not insulting, was intended. I am really sorry if it came accross that way.

Thanks again for all the effort you put into making my empeg even better, and for enriching this community.

I know that you all don't see much of me (I don't post much) but I'm always watching (scary big-brother thought) and I'm always excited about any new Hijack releases... Mark - Please don't get descouraged! I can confidently say that we all love you here on this "unofficial empeg board" and I'm genuinely upset that someone was able to rile you up to this point (no matter if it was intentional or not ;-)... I've felt (and surely others will agree) that your contributions to our beloved empeg has supassed our every expectation - words cannot express how grateful I am for your contributions... If there will ever be a Nobel Prize for OpenSource contributions, feel proud that you'd have a group of enthusiastic nominations from us here! (who knows, maybe a hijacked empeg will end up saving the world). I don't really know how I can help except for offering hosting space and maybe some money for a domain registration, but I'd do anything to keep it as effortless as possible for you to maintain Hijack...

Heh. All I can say to that is that when I can finally afford one , you can be damn sure there'll be a hijacked empeg inside.

Only got back to the board today after many weeks of being away (the things getting married does to your time sheduling!), and saw this tread - and got pretty shocked. Mark, I have always thought of you as one of the few true mainstays of the empeg community, and really appreciated all the hard work you have put in. The empeg would be a much lesser device without hijack, and the board a much poorer place without your helpful comments. As many other people have already stated, there will always be a couple of turkeys in any group, and you can let them get you down! And as you well know, you can't always please *everybody*.

Agreed. People like Mark, Tony Fabris, Mark Cushman, PCA and a handful of others give far more to this community than they ever get in return. Hopefully you'll be back soon Mark.

Mark, are you just needing basic hosting, or do you rely in the autocompiling features that SourceForge.com supplies?

If it's just hosting, I'll offer to you an FTP account on my domain hosted at DreamHost.com. The domains I've got are terrymathews.net and terrymathews.us, but I can point other domains to it.

If you just want to call it quits, I don't think anyone here can blame you. But if you're just looking for better hosting, LMK. [email protected]

I don't post on here much. Not being particularly technically minded, I don't have a great deal to offer.

One thing I can offer though is my thanks to you, Mark, for all the effort and time you have dedicated to this small community. It's a sad day indeed that sees you leave the fold and end your support.

The search button combined with your posts (and a whole host of the other "usual suspects") have made living with an Empeg a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience. It could have been so different.

I do hope you reconsider.

Re: Hijack -- Get it while you can - 21/06/2005 05:03

Don't know if Terry hits the point, but if he does I can offer you making the "European part" of your Code on my machine (100 Gigs of free traffic every month left, 100 MBit/s in Frankfurt, Germany).
But maybe it's not as easy as this.

I'm sure many people would help Mark if he just says what he needs. Ok, I could imagine that we cannot create a new sf.net (I just could offer rowi.net :-) ).

Mark, please give it a try, you know that our empegs feel better when being "pimped" with your latest Hijack ;-). And you even know that we feel better if our empegs feel good... And last but not least: You are part of our family.

regards
Rolf

(hoping that just offering space and traffic could be enough to change his mind - keeping fingers crossed...)
