Setting up a dev environment on the Empeg

Setting up a dev environment on the Empeg - 19/08/2001 04:04

Hello,

can anybody tell me how to setup a development environment on the Empeg itself? I have searched on the developer sites but only found information for cross compiling.

Frank van Gestel has a Debian archive on his page, but I am not really sure what to do with that one.

Ok, after a bit of fiddling I put the Debian image on the Empeg and am now running it as chroot'ed environment. However, to be any useful, I need to do a dist-upgrade over the network and install packages the same way.

The only kernel I found to support PPP was a very old one... are there any newer kernels out there with PPP support compiled in?

Is it safe to install one of the old kernels that have PPP support?

Why do you need PPP? apt-get will work over normal Ethernet

I thought so, too, but the developer sites gave me a different feeling. Anyway, I got it to work, with no DNS, however. I thought that PPP would automatically provide DNS and routing information.

Repeat after me: You don't need PPP.

You do need a working DHCP server -- in order to give you routing information. However, the player application doesn't save the DNS settings.

You probably also need the following:

/sbin/ifconfig
/bin/ping
/etc/services
/etc/protocols
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/lib/libnss_compat-2.1.2.so
/lib/libnss_db-2.1.2.so
/lib/libnss_files.so.2
/etc/host.conf
/etc/resolv.conf
/lib/libnss_dns*
/lib/libdb*
/lib/libresolv*

You can find them here.

Repeat after me: I got it working already!

Only the first synch to match Debian Potato wasn't able to use DNS, after that everything was pretty easy.

Thanks though. :)

Cool . Hopefully someone else will find the other stuff useful, anyway.

You do off course, need ethernet. That rules out Mk1 owners then

You do need PPP over serial.

And just why are you so grumpy, Roger?
