Speaker Thump

I have a new Rio Car unit that I installed a week ago, running the developer version of 1.03. Last night I upgraded to v2.00b3 and then installed the Hijack kernel.

Ever since then, whenever I turn off the ignition, I get speaker thump.

I've found references to this in the FAQ, but they refer to a manufacturig fault that would have been present from install. This only began after I did the upgrade.

Unfortunately, I didn't run the unit between installing dev 2.00b3 and the Hijack kernel, so I can't tell what caused this.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a workaround.

Since you are the second person to report this problem (good work digging up the other thread), I'm asking the empeg team whether or not this will be corrected in the next beta release. Thanks for the reminder.

After upgrading to 2.0b3 I occasionally hear thumps during boot at home, too (but I was too lazy to downgrade and check they indeed disappear). Hm, perhaps something to do with VolAdj... No time to investigate thoroughly right now .

It would have been fixed in the last release if any of us has ever experienced it!

We're going to need some kind of context to work out what's happening (and why it isn't happening to most players).

Does the player shut down completely when the thump occurs? Or does it correctly go into standby?

Ok, I get a tiny thump (pop) as well. Don't know if it's completely 2.0b3 related. This is also at home - I dont have my car install completed to check there.

If I have my amplifier already turned on, plugging in the power to the empeg I will hear a slight pop as the connector begins to touch the contacts - this is before any software gets involved - seems purely electrical.

Then I get a more distinct pop when the empegTux/Rio logo appear (right when the standby light is turning off and the image is popping up).

I tried it right now to verify - because the last few times I've connected, I turned on my amp last and obviously don't hear anything that way.

The player gets shut down completely (no standby) when the ignition is turned off. It also forgets things after the thump, like which song was playing and volume... probably due to incorrectly shutting down.

If there is anything else I can do you help you guys track this down, just let me know.

Is this a RioCar or Empeg?
If you "forget" to connect +12V power on the empeg, it will
actually run of the ignition-sense wire, and that will cause
this behaviour. Altrnatively, it could be that your Car sends
a volotage spike when you turn of the ignition. This can be fixed by instralling a diode, the empeg-guys will send you one for free if you ask.

In the case of the RioCar, both these issues are fixed.

Your particular description sounds like the negative spike bug, detailed in the FAQ here.

However, the top of this thread (and the other thread linked at the top of this thread) are describing a problem that happens only with a certain revision of the software. Are you sure you're talking about the same problem?

Yeah, the linked thread at the top is my thread. I was the first to report this problem. I can go back to 1.03 and the thump is not present (tested twice).

I am going to email support for the diode adapter anyways.

Sorry for the delay, I've been away the last week.

I've backed out the Hijack Kernel so now its just 2.0b3 dev version. Hardware is the rio model. (2.0a?)

The problem is still happening. The symptom is that when I turn off the ignition there is a loud thump and the unit shuts off completely. It does not go into standby. I didn't realize it was completely shutting down, however when I was running 1.03 dev I could access the unit via wireless ethernet on standby, whereas now the link light on my access point shows no connection. (and of course the led on the front panel is off)

I don't remember if 1.03 had a shutdown graphic, but it is now killing the display immediately.

I thought I would go back a release to 1.03 dev, to prove out the hardware (and my wiring).

Is it just a matter of re-installing the 1.03 kernel from emplode2.0b3 and then switching to the earlier version of emplode, or were there database changes....

Strange. This sounds like the negative spike bug. But that's not supposed to happen on Rio-brand players. And it only happened when you upgraded to 2.0b3.

Please write the empeg support team directly about this and get a dialogue going with them. If it's a software issue, they will sort it out for the next release, but I would guess that they need to speak directly to someone with the problem.

I will contact support directly, and transfer this thread to the bugs list.

I wanted to revert back to 1.03 first to prove out the spike bug, wiring etc. which is why i've continued this post. Do you know if I can go from 2.0b3 back to 1.03?. When the upgrade was running it made reference to db changes....

It's no problem to downgrade to 1.03. Uninstall emplode 2b3, install emplode 1.3, then run the upgrader to re-flash 1.3 to the empeg.

Sounds more like he has the switched and permanent feeds wired the wrong way round (is he in a VW? This is, after all, one of the FAQ points).

I think it would be a better start if he could verify that the permanent feed *is* permanent. And no, please don't say "but it only happened after the upgrade!" or I think I will jump off a cliff.

Do the measurements on the perm and switched 12V first, and then accuse the s/w afterwards.
