Feature Request for Hijack: Right-Left Delay - 14/02/2002 06:27

I'm gonna start a new thread so there...

OK, First the good news: It works! Left or right delays of up to 12.7ms in 0.1ms steps (about 3.3 cms or 1.3 inches) work and controlled thru Hijack with the setting saved in the same manner as other Hijack functions. I honestly can't hear a real difference on PC speakers on my desk but I don't have a car at the moment. I could add delays upto 25 odd ms in steps of 0.2 ms if people want it.

I have tested it by sampling a pure sine analogue audio output into my PC using Cooledit and then checking the difference in start/stop times. There are a few small clicks when you change the delay time while playing which I can probably remove with a bit of fine tuning.

I have allocated an extra 2304 bytes of kmalloc memory for the buffer. Can anyone see a problem with this? The buffering doesn't seem to load the CPU excessively.

Now the bad news: Because I don't have a car (and I had to catch the last train so I could catch the last bus), I didn't have time to completely tidy up the first release and put it on a website for you guys. Now I'm at home and it's sleep time for us here in Oz.

So look for a binary sometime in about 12 hours from now.

If you guys can comment on what I have said above I can probably make the changes before I release the first binary.

Excellent, I was going to ask if that was 25ms each side. That would mean you could allow for a car with speaker separation of 18 metres or so. 12.5ms from centre to hard left or right is great.

Dang it, This device just continues to astound me!

There you go slashdot geebens, do that with your home made mp3 pseudo-car-player!

Wow, great work. I can't wait to try it. Did you move the delay after the VolAdj or are you still prior to it? If you're still prior, it'll be interesting to see what VolAdj does to the sound when the channels are effectively "out of sync"... I'll be happy to test it for you though - I have a very high-end studio/theater setup at home (complete with Electrostatic speakers) and my car could definately use the L/R Delay...

Awesome. Now we need to have 3 separate presets.

1) Driver Alone In Car

2) Optimized for Passenger

3) Optimized for Driver+Passenger

Wouldn't Driver & Passenger just be centered? Not sure if I'm missing something here...

In any car I've ever ridden in, yes. But it's still different than the other two scenarios he mentioned. So it counts as a third preset.

The DSPs that support left-right delay and front-rear delay have 5 or so presets to account for the various seating positions and a "Default".

Yeah, but they suck! Actually, my Sony 770 is like this. It's really not very good unless you can fine tune it. Seems like it would be, but in my experience it isn't. My old Sony 600DSP was adjustable, and you'd start centered and slowly move it. Nothing, nothing, nothing, and then BAM! you'd be in the sweet spot. Adjustable is much better (I think...).

Im thinking there might be a bug in the kernel. Twice today with a right channel delay my right front channel just stopped. But pulling the unit out and putting it back in fixed it.

Mmm OK. It was probably my bad creating a new thread. Can we move to here now:

http://empeg.comms.net/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=hackers_prog&Number=69464&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

As I haven't installed mine in a car yet, I don't have a real opportunity to give it a long test. If you can work out how to generate this problem do let me know and I can probably fix it.

So the left channel kept playing properly? Did you try and change the delay after it stopped?
