Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 19:29

Nice work!

And for all the suggestions of mine that you've added, my favorite new feature is one that I hadn't even thought of... the direct FTP upload! That makes it so much easier.

For all the changes you've listed in the readme, I think you added/fixed several other things too.

So, when's version 6 due out?

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 19:39

Well, it's about 2:40am here, so I'm probably going to wait till the morning before V6 coding starts!
The obvious new feature will be to add a direct FTP download option.
I also need to change the save routine, as it always does a save as at the moment (hence asking for a filename). A save and a seperate save as option would be good.

Then I'll have to find some more new ideas to put in (although there are few on the other thread left yet... =)

I should point out that sometimes my empeg reboots after an ftp upload. If this happens, it might cause an error if you try to upload again later. I'll look into it.

Keep the files coming, the Jack in the box is great... =)

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 19:56

AWESOME stuff! V5 is my first try at FlanceEdit and it's amazing I'm very impressed with how easy it is to create new moves... How did you get all the interpolation to work so well? Like how does it know how to rotate in 3D space around a certain point? Very impressive.

One wish, can the "Load" dialog remember the last path used? For me it always pops up with C:\ and I have to browse to the path where the dance files are.

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:05

I did mean to store the last used load and save paths. However when I actually put the configuration saving into V5, I forgot all about it... =)

Whilst on the subject, do people prefer registry entries or ini files for saved configuration settings?

It uses simple linear interpolation, except for the head which isn't quite right yet (it should probably be in line with the body)

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:08

awesome...
I prefer ini because I keep it on a portable hard drive that is drive X: om every computer I use it on, but it would be a different registry everytime
How close are you on creating new *.raw named files?
Do you think it will be possible?

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:12

For a smallish app like this, ini files are great. As things get bigger, I think registry entries make sense.

Another suggestion.. How about home keys to jump to first/last frame in a move? Like maybe Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End or something It'd be best if it always worked regardless of whether a text box has focus or not. A lot of times I'll play a move and it'll go back to frame 1 and I'll want to add onto it... Hitting Ctrl-End would be easier than manually going to the end frame.

I see HOURS of wasted time in my future. Anyone who's waiting for my alarm clock will *not* be happy. (that's what I sat down to do tonight, but this is too much fun!)

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:14

Creating new files shouldn't be a problem. I haven't bothered so far, only because I've been copying an existing file as a starting point.

I might switch to ini files (or at least make it an option) for V6...

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:17

I like the home and end idea, it should appear in V6... =)

Either way's fine with me.

I did mean to store the last used load and save paths.
I'll scratch that one off my wishlist

While it would be nice to have the head in-line with the body, your current implimentation matches how it works on the empeg: The head is always straight vertical. If LowerBody.Y >= Shoulders.Y then it's striaght down, else it's straight up.

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:24

Ok, now that I've had a few minutes to play with V5, here's whats left on my wishlist. This includes all previous items I've mentioned too so you don't have to go through my other posts too.

Cosmetic bugs:
- Bottom of "Current Move" and "Current Key Frame" don't line up
- Bottom of "Body Part" doesn't line up with "X Pos" & "Y Pos"

Wishlist:
- Warn before quitting with unsaved changes
- Drag whole person option (ALT+drag?)
- Select multiple points to drag at same time (CTRL+click; drag?)
- Copy Move
- FTP upload status... maybe in unused lower left (not that it takes time to upload, just a confirmation that it did it)
- Rotate on X, Y & Z axes
- Scale on X & Y axes
- Default empeg network name of "empeg"
- Require mouse to grab an anchor point before dragging
- Options -> Snap to Grid (shows faint grid in preview)
- Options -> Grid Size (default 10?)

Wishing for the stars:
- Export/Import to/from CSV or TAB delimited file. Chosing this would only export the current move and it would have a row for each frame. The columns would be all the fields of data. This would let you export a move, load it in Excel and play with the numbers using any trig functions you want. Then import back in to Flance Edit to see how it looks.

Someone's going to complain (not me) that Delete shouldn't be a shortcut for delete frame. They're going to say that they were trying to use the delete key to change the X or Y positions, and didn't want to delete the frame. Here's my reply: Since there's a delete confirmation dialog, you don't lose any data by accident. With a max of 3 digits, it's not that big of a deal to just move right and use backspace. Even if you're in the habit of using delete more often than backspace, you'll get used to it soon enough when a dialog pops up everytime you forget and hit delete. I say keep it the way it is.

hmmm... what to draw next?

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 16/02/2002 20:28

I was thinking about asking for an upload area on riocar.org, but there's two reasons I haven't:

1) All the uploads are gonna have one of the same three names
2) Nobody else has posted anything... all we've got so far is my lame ones.

With all the chat about wanting an editor, I thought I'd be busy downloading everyone else's dance moves rather than making my own. But then, maybe everyone else is actually taking the time to make good ones!

I disagree. I think there is a place for an entire section of these downloads.

I cannot remember what it is called, but has anyone seen the stick men fight made in Flash, the one with the Matrix style ending.
Now if that could be ported.....

Re: FlanceEdit V5 - 18/02/2002 03:19

Stickfighter is the name. The only place I can find it nowadays is at http://www.unbelievablestuff.com/flashfun/fight3/index.html.

It can't be done with the Empeg though, the people can not interact.

This animation has been ported in ema files viewable on the empeg with empanim and you can build your own anims with a Windows prog called empegvid
