Sync empeg with PC structure. - 21/06/2002 13:12

Hello,

I have seen somewhere that there is a linux version of a program that will sync the empeg up with the files on a PC. I used to have a NEO35 (actually I still have it, anyone want to buy it!?) and the thing I miss about it is that I keep all of my music in 2 places, on my PC for home listening and on my player. With the neo, I used to be able to run filesync (a windows program) that would look at the files on my NEO (essentially a drive for all windows is concerned) and compare it to a directory on my PC. If it found anything new on my PC, it would automatically sync the files and folder structure. I realize it would be harder to do this with the empeg because of FIDs and all, but this would be awesome if there was a windows based sync program for the empeg that worked similar to this. Anyone have any idea/suggestions.

I know I have seen someone request this somewhere... maybe in the Wish List forum. Did a search and couldn't find it, though.

Yea I couldnt find anything about it either. Im not a Linux guy so I dont know much about the Empeg kernel, but it seems that it wouldnt be rocket science to come up with something like this....dunno though.

Yea that looks pretty similar to what I need...I didnt know that it could do that...once again I guess I havent read the FAQ in its entirety...thats the problem with us Americans, we never read the instructions!

I should probably add a specific FAQ entry about what happens when you drop your entire MP3 directory onto Emplode.

As I understand it, here's how it will work with 2.0 software:

- If the exact same song (same size and tag data) is in a folder that is the exact same name as a given playlist (and it's in the exact same position in the tree), then it will be dupe-checked and left out of the update. So if all you ever do is add tunes to your PC, then this method works.

- If you delete songs from the PC they will not get deleted from the player, though.

- If you use M3U playlists to point to songs, the song files themselves will get duplicated on your player (assuming the checkbox in emplode is checked).

Anyone have any more details on how it works?

Well, I took a stab at this here.

I know it doesn't help this gentleman's particular situation, but it's something the FAQ has needed for a while.

I used to have a NEO35, and it was nice to sync just like you mentioned. I've asked for the feature, and it looks like it's finally starting to happen: check this.
