Hijack display bug, v278

Hijack display bug, v278 - 29/06/2002 10:20

Hello,

I havn't updated Hijack for a while (since v242) and I noticed a bug in v278 today when I did.
Using ftp and 'site reboot' the first time it boots up ok (nice animation btw), but if I reboot it the same way a second time the display is all messed up. However I notice no problems just re-applying power.

Yeah, actually, this is new in 278.
If a 'soft reboot' is done (by sync'ing, or selecting Home/Work location, or by selecting 'Reboot' from the Hijack menu), the display will not initialize properly. Power has to be cut and restored..

Mark, leave something commented out? :>

My 278 isn't working correctly either, but in a different way. I have the screen switch-off setting to kill power to the screen after 30 minutes of being paused... paused and left for a bit.

Came back, hit the top button, which normally resumes playback. VFD starts up (can see heating wires) but no display or music. Hit the play button again and it comes to life, except the status LED is on while the player is playing (I thought this wasn't possible).

Reboot fixes it, and I haven't had a chance to check if this happens every time the screen blanker kicks in yet.

That’s amusing, I just logged in to report this bug… and here it is already.
A few additions
First off, this is 100% reproducible on my Empeg. Set up the display to blank or power down, and ~36 minutes later it stops playing. The display goes off in the requested time (currently 45 sec) @ 65% screen, and gives no indication of any problems. Then later it just powers down. Hitting the down button will wake it back up, and it starts playing just where it left off. This occurs running on AC power, I have not tested it in my car.

Let me know if I can provide some more useful info.

(edit) - forgot to mention that this is NOT new, and is at least 4 Hijack versions old.

This is not new in v278, but seems to be becoming more and more common over time. I really do not know what is causing it yet.

A couple of people have noticed this on players WITHOUT Hijack installed, though it is much more common with Hijack. Looks like a race condition in the hardware init, or possibly a hardware resource contention issue in the drivers somewhere.

Hijack v280 includes some new safeguards to try and reduce hardware contention in a couple of cases, which might improve it some.

Wow, strange. I have NEVER seen this problem on my Empeg at all, and now, on 278, it happens EVERY TIME with a 'reboot'. (Be it from the Hijack Main Menu, Emplode's sync reboot, After the Home/Work reboot..)
Gonna try 280, see what happens..

Mark, I don't think that they are talking about the temporarily garbled display when rebooting issue, but where the display remains garbled and only pulling the empeg from the sled fixes it...I had never seen this one before. I think it cropped up in the hijack version that had the JIFFIES() change.

In reply to:

Yes, yes! Once it gets garbled, it STAYS that way until power is cut. Happens in AC or DC mode..
