ISO Connectors - 05/07/2000 18:24

Has anyone in the US ever actually had an installer USE the ISO connector that comes on the Empeg units? I went to a fairly reputable dealer in the area, who looked at me like I had my head screwed on wrong when I tried to say "That's an ISO connector, that's the international standard organization, that's what car stereos are SUPPOSED to use, you should just have an adapter to convert that out to raw wires if you need it, or to the manufacturer's harness.

Instead (I let them) cut the ISO connector off to use the raw wires. I figure if I have to I can always get another bay in the future, but I plan to have it in my car for a while so it wasn't much of an issue.

What are other peoples' experiences with this?

I'm not in the US, but my car didn't have an ISO plug.
I had to get a Ford to ISO convertor (About 15 UKP, including the speaker connectors)

However, as I have 2 head units, I've spliced another ISO (with just the power wires) into the convertor (Actually, it was spliced for the Mk1, I just found another ISO plug and stuck it on the wires for the Mk2... When I say spliced, I mean all nicely soldered and heatshrunk... =)

So see if you can get a convertor before chopping the wires off.

Did you try asking them to look on the back of a Sony head unit? Or a Clarion, or a Blaupunkt, or a Visteon. Those ISO Connector shaped things are, in fact, ISO Connectors. Strange, that :-)

Practically all after market head units use them, even in the USA. Maybe you call them something different, or maybe people are confused because we only use half of one.

Dredging this up...

Where can I get one of the connectors that plugs into the Empeg's ISO connector? Mine seems to be missing the connector with the bare wires, which is what I'm after...

Thanks,

Any car audio shop should be able to help you. It's a pretty standard adapter plug.

How about someplace online? Is it really just called an "ISO connector" / plug / whatever, because I'm having a *really* hard time finding anything by that name from a webstore on this side of the pond.

This part is actually difficult to come by over here in the US. Finding the female end that plugs into the car's loom is relatively easy, but very few people stock the male end that will plug into a HU.

I believe that you want the Metra 71-1784 available here.

If it's missing why don't you just ask for one? [email protected]
