'00 Impreza turbo, and home made dock install - 09/04/2004 01:46

Just completed the install in my new Impreza turbo, and thought I'd post pics of both it, and my home dock I made from an old AIWA VCR - but am puzzled by the photo gallery section on RioCar.org - how do you post pics to it?

Once I have that sorted I will populate it and post a link in this thread.

Well, I thought I'd pop the pics up on Yahoo - easy and quick. See what you reckon. Maybe the more recent, or American models are different, but there is no bezel wierdness on a UK '00 Impreza - it is exactly the right size, and also the correct depth to make the empeg sit perfectly.

Bit of a tight fit behind for the wires, but the tuner fits okay behind the kickplate at the passenger's footwell. I'm going to pop my handsfree kit in sometime in the next couple of weeks and it looks like it should fit easily enough too.

My home dock was a lot of fun too - ripped the insides out of an old AIWA VCR, except for the PSU. I had to replace the voltage regulator with a slightly higher voltage (up from an 11 to 15V, if I remember right) but it all worked out pretty easy.

While I was setting up those photo albums, I thought I might as well add one with pics from the Ratho climbing centre - Europe's biggest indoor climbing centre. The tallest routes are about 30 metres, and the difficulty ranges from a couple of 3's, up to a wide range of 6As, Bs and Cs, and some crazy 7s and 8s (not sure what that is in other ratings). As you can see, it has climbs even a 3 year old can use. (In fact I take my 21 month old daughter along as well, but she wouldn't hold still for a photo)

Say, looking at that Car Install Gallery, the image on the empeg for photo #4 looks familiar.

too cool

Way to go on both installs, very nice!

Next project: Getting the play/pause buttons on the VCR's front panel to control the empeg.

Heh - I tried to get a decent pic of that one, but my camera wanted either higher light levels or longer exposure, so that was the best I could get.

Nice bit of Scooby sliding - cheers

Was fairly tempted, but as I am always across the other side of the room, the only important bits on the dock itself were the connectors and the power switch. Luckily the One4All Kameleon remoter control works on all my kit including the empeg, so I never need to leave the comfort of the couch

Getting the ethernet jack stumped me until I read various posts recommending using wood and glue (I had used a bit of coathanger but I couldn't get the spring right)

Of course, to use that ethernet I then had to cat-5 the house. Why don't houses come with cable runs by default, sheesh! And now I have streaming audio in the server room, my computer room and anywhere downstairs - as well as directly through my amp setup in the living room.

Did you see any of the pictures in the FAQ and/or the RioCar photo gallery?

Yes - some of them were very impressive. And much neater...I was confident with the electrical/electronics side, as that's what my background is in, but physically getting it all set up was fun.

On a similar note - I finally got rid of my alternator whine yesterday. Went round wiggling everything until it vanished then tightened everything and fixed my cable runs. Not sure what the cause was, but 'magic' fixed it

Also managed to arrange things so my hands-free phone kit should fit - a fun job as there isn't a lot of room behind the dash!
