RioCar Non Standard width - does not fit "DIN" RX7

RioCar Non Standard width - does not fit "DIN" RX7 - 21/01/2002 07:37

After much searching, I have concluded that the RioCar is a has a non standard width of 7.2 inches. Standard Din size is around 178-179mm or 7.0625 inches.

My RX7 is a standard DIN width. While the sled will barely squeeze through the facia, it is too wide for the dash bracket behind.

Does anyone know of after market brakets?

Thanks,
Michael

If FedEx delivers mine today, I'll post some exact dimensions (I'm really surprised that the dimensions in the FAQ are so sparse) including the flair at the front and hole locations..

My guess is that the 7.2 inches measurement is the measurement of the face, and not the body of the empeg, since the docking unit is actually smaller.

The width of the "Sled" is 7.2" according to the manual. According to my tape measure its 7-3/16" (7.1875" or 182.6mm)...definitly wider than "DIN" 178mm!

No, we are standard size.

If you take a standard sony, blaupunkt, kenwood, etc, these appear to be 178-179mm - but this is *without the mounting collar* (ie, the little thing which goes into the hole first and has push-out tabs to secure it). The mounting collar on all the radios we have here *is* around 182mm, which is exactly how big the empeg sled is.

You won't have any more issues than you would have had with a sony, etc.

Except if they use the mounting system where brackets are screwed to the sides of the HU directly, then the thickness of the collar and the play between it and the sides of the HU makes a couple of millimeters difference.
On all european cars I've seen the sled has fit, but they tend to use a simple hole in the panel for mounting, instead of brackets. On my VW Polo it is a very tight fit, (you should've included some KY ) almost no need for the tabs...

My DENON DTC-950R CD player's "sled" is 178mm, It fits fine into the 1989 RX7 coupe's dash bracket, which again has an opening of 179mm. The RioCar sled is in fact wider, 182mm, it does not fit.

I can make anything fit, but the RioCar install is going to invovlve some surgery beyond most aftermarket DIN sized head units.

Someone who knows the actual DIN specification from Germany needs to pipe in here.

Read the instructions that came with the RioCar...there is a note that specifically says that while the unit is standard DIN size, some JAPANESE cars might not fit properly. For those you will need to contact a pro installer....or just get really creative and try it yourself.

I think there is more than one "DIN" spec out there.

Yeah, many people have told me that Toyota has a different specification for their stereos. I have a '96 Camry, and a little Dremmel work was required for it to fit along with my headunit.

Actually, in this case a petroleum product of some type would be preferred. Even though the sled is stainless, KY being water-based wouldn't be a good mix (stainless can still corrode )

You could also use a heavy rubber mallet and a shoehorn.

I can also tell you that the Acura Integra's dual-DIN stereo hole isn't exactly double-DIN size (again, the mounting collar issue with aftermarket heads).

We are DIN-E spec; I just looked for the spec document (which I'm sure I have, I remember paying for it & downloading it from the ISO website...). Japanese cars can sometimes be different, though. All the head units we have on the shelf here, including Sony, Kenwood, Blaupunkt, Ford and Alpine, require 182mm width holes in the dash.

This fits exactly with the 182mm hole in european (VW, Audi, Mercedes, etc) and many japanese (CRX, Civic, mazda miata, etc) cars. *Some* cars, eg toyotas, can have "captive" dins, where there is a smaller hole, to prevent the stereo from being removed easily.

1989 is fairly old, I know the hondas had the right width but about 3mm extra height in ~1987.

Fits just fine in my Isuzu Rodeo.. Had to expand the hole in the dash, but that wasn't too hard. Now if only my old headunit could fit in my CD changer spot.
