Has anyone thought of making the EMPEG run on zip disks or even beter run on an orb drive www.castlewood.com
Orb drives have 2.2 gig disks for only $29 were talking lots of stoarage.
Even beter it transfers at 12.2MB/second
would this work or even be a posibility for the EMPEG

One word comes to mind - reliability. Cost isn't an issue when you are spending 1300$ on a car radio. It's not likely to happen - see previous posts on the issue.

Running on zip disks isn't too practical. That's about a zip for 1 or 2 CDs worth of music (depending on 100 or 250 Meg zips.) Reminds me of project I saw elsewhere on the web, where someone used a Sony MDH-10 to record MP3s on 140Meg minidiscs. What's the point? We want lots of media-less storage. The only thing that would be better than what empeg has now, would be the solid-state 100Gig "drives" that the U.S. military use in jet fighters. Those would be interesting

How about 2 60GB 2.5" drives inside the empeg for a total of 120GB of storage?

If you have so little music that you don't mind using removable media, just use a small drive on the empeg. If you have so much music that 120GB isn't enough, just use TWO empegs.

Anything short of a Dataplay disc is completely useless as removable storage for MP3 tracks in my opinion. If you don't know what a Dataplay disc is, fire up Google in another browser window, I'm feeling lazy tonight.

2.2GB for $30 seems kinda pricey compared to hard drives...

But imagine all the music that fits on those two babies. It's just close your eyes and swipe the cc..

I don't know about you, but my 12gb + 30gb is as full as can be, and i still have a bunch of cd's not on the empeg. Typically those i really wanna hear when i'm not at home

Hi.

Oh boy, you people seem to have _huge_ collections of CDs. My 20GB (I need to update my sig) is only full because of all Harry Potter audiobooks (all 4 books, german and english versions) and Lord of the Rings (complete in english and german as well). My own audio CDs wouldn't fill it at all.
A rough calculation reveiled that a 120GB MkII would be able to carry 711 hours of 384kbit CBR MP3s. That's about a month of continous (sleepless) listening. Given the fact that highest quality VBR encoding with lame typically turns out as an average bitrate of less than 180kbit/s, this is a full 63days (again, sleepless). Listening about 3 hours a day (which is quite typical for me), this turns out as not hearing a single track twice in over 16 months. Or, when talking about CDs, this is well over 1000 CDs (with a typical Pop CD carrying about 40-41 minutes of music).

Hmm, on a second thought, I have access to about 1900 CDs, anyone knowing when 120GB notebook drives will become available?

Greetings!

The 60 GB drives are available as "aftermarket upgrades" from Dell. They are sold as Dell branded, so you get a 20% discount ($400), even though they are the standard IBM Travelstars. There was a thread in the For Sale section... I have the link somewhere... Search for part number 340-3196.

The drives are great! Absolutely no installation problems.

I have approximately 1200 CDs encoded in mine, all VBR, all of the Harry Potter books (UK version), Douglas Adams (Dirk Gently's and HHGTTG Record Version), tons of assorted music (complete list), with about 20+ GB spare for future expansion. With Hijack, it has turned into a rather extensive jukebox for the office.

If anyone has questions about the 60s, let me know...

I think what tends you happen is the more stuff you put onto the empeg, the garbage you tend to find. :-)
