External Display

External Display - 12/10/2000 06:22

Just because this is a wish does not mean it wil ever happen. But then that is what wishes are about.

2 similar things :

Optional external display, for those with larger cars or perhaps the occasional winnebago/mobile home. Basicly a second VFD that you can put in parallel or something. Probably hard to do though.

Optional PAL/NTSC video output. Perhaps nice for future applications that some people are already planning like navigation systems. I know, it is not something the EMPEG was made for but then thats what I like about it. An extensible platform. Perhaps even for display panels with touchscreen options. It could even serve as an even more dazzling display.

Cheers,
Hans

(Mind you still at work so if I say more stupidities forgive me)

TV display is very often requested. It's already designed and running (without visuals, I haven't had time but I plan to stick my own in there). Some possible features in player version 1.1 will make it very usable. I also already have an external display designed, it's backlit LCD right now but could just as easily be VFD. It basically displays the same stuff as the TV display. I'm sure I will stick these things in the project section when I feel they are worth putting there.

Most of my projects are hardware driven because I don't care for computer software programming. However, I love to do microcontroller and DSP programming.

Pictures of it anywhere by any chance ? Amazed someone already has a prototype if that is the term.

Re: External Display - 12/10/2000 11:30

Sorry no pictures, I don't have a digital camera but it isn't all that exciting to see. There is only limited information coming out of the empeg right now. Mike was going to look into sending out more information so the screen could be replicated on TV, LCD, ect.

Well personally I was thinking about the mobile video screens you can pick up left and right lately. I have one here I was planning on using on a car-computer system I whipped up myself. Until I found out the things the folks at empeg can tell you about ...

Mind you it was a very interesting thing to do. I had an old laptop laying abouts anyway (well old, P233mmx, yeah old) ... It's a 5.5 inch NTSC LCD that just hast really nice resolution ...

It even has a switch so you can mount it upside down and simply invert the image and runs on 12V.

It would be an ideal addon for something like this.

Hans

Re: External Display - 12/10/2000 13:36

I originally started the TV output to interface with an Alpine head unit with video screen. I wanted a bigger display than the empeg had. Sounds like you are interested in basically the same thing.
That screen should be perfect for a bigger display or backseat mp3 selections.

I've done the computer-in-the-car thing too. No comparison to the empegs UI.

It was just a hack to check out displays for our home network platform (which later became the Rio Receiver). I seem to recall that this one connected to IDE using some very nifty glue that Hugo put together - we were thinking of marketing it for PC server cases :-)

Re: External Display - 13/10/2000 14:57

I bet you did Rob

Well, basicly it would be a logical step up from the current UI which is indeed great. Just not suited I think for things like showing full-detail road maps and stuff. See I am still kinda hoping that will be on the list in the near future .

Hans

Ahh, so something similar to the IMD (Integrated Managment Display) many Compaq servers have. That would be a neat option for even just a normal PC. The IMD is used by Compaq for showing errors, the boot process, and has driers for OS's to display load and such. All pretty useful for a quick glance at a server.
