Spin the knob to enter characters

When naming EQ and radio station presets, I would really like to be able to spin the knob, arcade-game-style, to enter the letters for the presets.

Nicely put. That's the perfect description. I might have said "Nokia model 7100 style", but I think your version is more universal.

I remember the days you had to bang the joystick, the kind with the big red ball on top to spell the letters.

Plenty of early games used rotary encoders.

And a lot of them still do... As recreated in M.A.M.E., or with the original cabinet. I am personally very fond of Tempest and Major Havoc myself...
