Hijack or other: invert screen - 18/02/2002 18:49

i think it woudl be neat to see in a future version of hijack or something else to have an invert feature.. if its possible.. just so everything you see on the screen is inverted, it woudl be nice for my dash since its amber and everythign is inverted opposed to the empeg.. just an idea..

Cool idea. Would also be a way to erase phosphor burn.

Well for fun I had a quick play and here it is. Looks pretty ugly actually, but all I did was simply invert the palette. i.e. black and full brightness are exchanged and the two intermediate levels are exchanged. Playing with palette settings might produce a better result but I doubt it.

Patch this against 2.0b11 (will probably patch against most kernels OK)

or Hijack v200 + Display invert binary for a Mk2/Mk2A

So does this one have the L/R delay patch in it as well?

I wonder if there is an easy way to set up all the kernel hacks on the download site in a matrix so you can choose, for example, hijack + L/R delay + invert screen etc - or is the only solution to have someone manually compile them all and offer them as separate kernel patches?

lol this was a really bad idea.. its ugly as all hell.. but thanks hehe ill leave it on for awhile.. it might look better in the car.. it looks good on some of the visuals.. but other than that.. yikes.. hope you didt spend too much time.. thanks for your efforts

Like I said, pretty ugly. I am glad I didn't spend too much time. It only took about 10 minutes now that I have this patch thing all sorted. No it doesn't include the LR patch, but I could do it if you really want.

As for a matrix of patches etc, basically I would have to generate every combination by hand since some patches rely on others while some are completely standalone. That's unless I get really tricky and do some real fancy cgi/perl to generate patches on the fly.

Thinking...

thinking....

thinking....

no too much work for little gain at the moment. If I start going nuts generating all different patches for different things, I might consider it.

I don't have hijack so I haven't tried it, but perhaps this could be a feature that you could turn on when you have poor visibility due to sunlight? Is it easier to read in sunlight?

Re: Hijack or other: invert screen - 18/03/2002 22:34

In direct sunlight it doesn't matter what's on your screen. You see nothing. Or rather, "everything." Whichever way you want to think of it, you see only a completely washed out display... So no, it's not likely to make a difference.

We originally avoided allowing the screen to be inverted because this would leave most pixels on all the time and therefore burn the screen in fast.

Re: Hijack or other: invert screen - 19/03/2002 22:25

I hadn't really though of burning in the display. I therefore recommend that people stop using it.

In fact I'll probably remove it tonight, unless someone desperately wants me to leave it up

For this reason, Itron recommend that the normal operating mode is white-on-black as opposed to inverted. They don't guarantee that pixel brightness will be totally consistent across the entire display and such problems are far more obvious with an inverted display.

Except that if somone does have screen burn in, wouldn't an inverted display be a great way to put in the "opposite burn" to even it out?
