There's been alot of talk about normalization in the songs - especially in random play mode..

This sounds like a good idea, but can I recommend something else? How about a 2-4 second cross fader? Alot of my music collection (and I'm sure alot of other people's...) are continously mixed cds... this kinda sucks in random play mode, but I don't want to exclude them from random play mode... It would work alot easier if there could be a short cross-over period (lower the volume on the one playing, at the same time bring in the new one and increase it's volume..) this could be the default option for Random play...

Just a suggestion:) The windows player that I currently use (apollo - great player, unfortunately it's no longer being developed) has this feature, and it really helps in random mode...

...I gave this some more thought, and I think the following behavior would be very helpful:

In random play mode, check the track playing to see if there's silence at the end and the next track to see if there's silence at the begining... if there isn't, cross-fade with next one.. Is this possible?

Actually, I've been playing around with the WinAmp crossfader plug-in, and my experience leads me to prefer almost opposite behaviour.

Songs which have a fade-out and fade-in are often the best to cross-fade; you lose most of the quiet time, the lead-out and lead-in often blend together well and the actual process is usually scarecely noticeable. When you cross-fade between punch-in and punch-out tracks, such as mixed CDs, pretty much all of the time the beats of the two pieces are different and you get a horrible beat clashing sound. Even when the two tracks are in sequence, it's rare that the crossfader actually gets it right and hits the beat spot on; because the actual timing of each beat is independant of the start/end of the song and the length of the crossfade.

I'd still like the crossfading option, but I think it should be applied to playlists - i.e. you can specify whether songs in a playlist are allowed to be crossfaded into/out of.

That's my experience, but it works.

I recently started using the SqrSoft crossfader plugin for WinAmp. It's quite smart about how it does crossfading. It scans ahead and waits until the volume level is already dropping in the song (below a certain threshold). Then it begins the fade. If the song just cuts out at the end, then that threshold is never triggered so it doesn't fade. Something like this would be pretty slick in an empeg!

Here's a snippet from the SqrSoft crossfader:

A few words on what this plugin basically does to crossfade the music...
Assuming a track is playing, the track reaches the end so Winamp tells the
output module to "close" the output, at this time the plugin first analyzes
the mixing buffer (that contains the track end) to eliminate the silence at
the end, once this is done it analyzes the sound level trying to find the
best point from where to mix, this is done by scanning the peak level in the
buffer from end to start, when the level has been found all the previous data
to that point is written on the sound device, if the desired level is not found
the buffer remains untouched.
There's a notification that the device must be closed, then a process waits
for a call from Winamp to "open" the device again, if this is not done the
process writes the mixing buffer contents on the output device, it waits until
the device finish playing and "closes" the output device, if the call is done
just cancels the awaiting close.
So once Winamp calls "open" it starts calling "write" to place the new track
data in the sound device. At this point the plugin starts searching for the
new data for a louder sound than the rise trigger level specified in the Gap
Killer.
Then it mixes the new track data with the one it is contained in the mixing
buffer using the envelope curves and finally it places the mixed data in a
new mixing buffer.
In this way the two tracks can be mixed. The mix is done while the sound
device is playing the data in the sound buffer. The sound buffer length
should be big enough to cover the time the plugin lost in the mix because the
mixing process is not very fast.
When the mix finishes the plugin continue playing normally until the track
reaches the end...

a freind of mine is developing auto mixing software that counts the bpm's (beat per min) and then matches them to teh two tracks in ? it then fades in and out to the new song he is even trying to get it so that it will into fade completely out but actually soemtimes keep a certain "trigger" sound from one track.. this is all in the developmental stages for him but he is workign on it actively.. will be interesting when he finishes it.

btw i dont relay know how he is doing it as im not good at coding (all i knwo is sql realy and html )

Im as confused as a baby in a topless bar...

Interesting. Does he know about "DJ Mix Pro"?

Do you think this is worth the 40 bucks?

Anymore on this crossfader for Empeg?
I was thinking the same thing today while playing Winamp.
Sqr Sfts crossfader is a great little plugin and fully configureable.

I started a thread on this before finding this one, but I use the same crossfading plug-in for Winamp it is just great! 1.1?? :)

It definitely won't be in v1.1. It's on the wishlist for a later release, though.
