Problems after upgrading to 8a

Problems after upgrading to 8a - 20/11/1999 06:41

I upgraded to beta8a. All went well well, but now I can't synchronize. I consistently get the message, "The play operation failed during stage 7 with error 0xfffffffe," whenever I launch emplode and it tries to syncronize. Both the player and emplode say they are at version 0.79 (beta8a).

Rob has acknowledged that there are some sync problems with beta8a (it appears that fsck isn't quite as robust in the latest release as it was). He said that they are working on pinning down the problem but that repeatedly trying to connect via emplode would eventually fix the problem. I tried that and it worked in the end.

The an other solution was using the developer image to run fsck manually (Rob advised that you contact empeg before attempting this).

The final solution was to downgrade to an earlier beta.

I went for the final solution. I tried dozens of times under various circumstances to synch with 8a and failed. I'm now back with 7b. I was suprised to see that the new visuals weren't wiped when I downgraded.

Thanks for the advice.

Now that Mike and Hugo are back in the UK we hope to have a fix for these Beta8 sync problems very soon.

I am in the same boat. The 8a doesn't synch (it seems to be related to the amount of data on the unit - 12gb) and I'm bothered but the odd behavior (loudness, etc) and inability to synch.

Now - how did you "down grade" - just install the 7b over the 8a? Did you change implode?

Hi !
Just to add a bit hope :
I had exactly the same probs with 8a, but then i tried some "simple" syncs ->
deleting one file -> sync ... Renaming a folder -> sync ... and THEN i started uploading new stuff and it worked and did not fail anymore also for more complex syncs ...

So after several tries it worked ....

Nils

P.S. this instability brings up my old demand again ->
I Invested so much time in TAGGING my mp3's and so on,
COULD'NT you enable us to save all those mp3's on the empeg to HD again, in a folder structure reflecting the playlists ( for linked files only produce the mp3 file for the first link, or the oldest .. )

Re: Problems after upgrading to 8a - 22/11/1999 16:27

The problem ocurred from people going from 7a to 8a without going through (and syncing once on) 7b in the meantime - a new database wasn't created. Mike sent a new version of emplode out to the people who had reported the problem to [email protected].

We're not allowing copying of empegs from the unit, but we will be offering a type of backup which keeps the structure and will find and re-upload your mp3s on your hard drive(s) or cd(s) in case of a problem. It won't be in the next release, but it is planned and should be a major help.

Copying Files from Player - 23/11/1999 07:46

Hugo,
I thought the limitation of not being able to copy files off the unit was temporary, to avoid copyright hassles. Is this now a permanent disability?

It's "temporary" until the law changes, or is better clarified. We don't plan to give ammunition to potentially powerful industry elements that may be hostile towards MP3 related technology.

Re: Copying Files from Player - 23/11/1999 10:27

I'd like to be able to use the empeg to take stuff home from work.
I can upload a zip file via usb, and emplode doesn't care (I stick it in unattached items though, to stop it trying to play the file.. =)
However, when I get home, I have to use the serial connection to recover the file, which takes hours... =(
I can understand the block on pulling mp3's off the unit, but how about a seperate files area for this type of usage?

Back to the serial port...
