Mk2 Car Startup Dimmer Problem ... - 08/07/2000 03:42

Hi !
Here is a minor, yet to be reported problem...
It may be a very exotic problem, as i went through a wild ride of downloading defective ( 11b from the CD ), wrong (11a for Mk1) and finally suitable images ( 11c and 11d ) to my Mk2, so it may only occur because of this ...

When i push the empeg into its case in the car, the empeg Logo and the boot messages are dimmed to a very low intensity, when the player THEN is activated to play some music, everything returns to normal brightness ...

Thats all, so the world would'nt stop spinning, but its still annoying, especially if you plan to show your own Logo ...

Nils

P.S. empeg people, please make the displayed Logo a seperate file, so we don't need to rebuild the kernel to change it, will you ? :-)

Mike mentioned that he might be able to do that. But as I understand it, it would be a bit of work since he'd have to somehow add the file to flash memory, and he'd have to figure out a way to get the file transferred to the flash as part of the upgrade process. This means new bootup code, and new code for EmpegUpgrade.

But yeah, I'd love to see that, too, so I don't have to bug Bobo every time a new kernel is released.

How about the dimming funftion itself? Is that supposed top work?
I've hooked up the Mk2 using the DIN connectorsm but when I turn on the headlights, the display doesn't change. No decrease in brightness. Should I check the wiring, or isn't the dimming function implemented yet?

Same here. I just wonder about that, the connector which is feeded to the ISO plug for light detection is not just 0 or 12V. It's regulated, either via a variable resisor (old car) or PCM (new cars) since it's supposed to dim the illumination of the radios display when you dim the dashboard. Will the empeg take care of that ? Anyways, nothing happens to my empeg when turning the light on. J.

It's not functioning yet - they are working on this also :)

The empeg only has 2 dim levels - normal & dim. Currently, the mk2 does not switch between these, you can only tweak the brightness manually. This will be implemented pretty soon.

So, is my understanding correct that the Mk II expects the headlight sense line to have either 0V or 12V but nothing in between?

Well, the threashold is about 5v, but it is only binary, yes.

I should clarify Hugo's statement: The headlight-activated dimmer is a binary selection, it's either on or off depending on whether you've got your headlights on or off. But the amount that it gets dimmed will be adjustable from the front panel.

What if there is a e.g. 50Hz PCM signal on the light-sense ? Does it mean the mk2 will dim 50 times a second ? Just want to make sure the PCM isn't disturbing the box. J.

PWM in the currently planned scheme of things will probably upset the box (well, you'll get random stuff depending on wether the line is sensed high/low on the periodic poll by the empeg).

The line is a *lights on sense*, not a dash dimmer input. You can probably get round the problem by putting a bigish capacitor on the input to smooth out the PWM (I assume you mean PWM).

In theory, the empeg could support such a dimming scheme, except for the fact that my cars don't appear to do this, so I have no reference frame.

Sure I meant PWM, sorry. Maybe it's a good idea to mention that cause on modern cars as you know the ISO feeds that instead of just on/off. TX, J.
