2.0b3: Weird EQ and Loudness settings after upgrad

2.0b3: Weird EQ and Loudness settings after upgrad - 17/10/2001 18:35

Just got back from a long drive. When I upgraded to 2.0b3, my loudness was changed to +13db (I think, it was at max), and my EQ was changed to preset 2 from preset 1 (flat).

My loudness is always set at 0db, as I have an external crossover that handles that job. Preset 2 happened to contain a setting with all but the highest bar set as low as possible. I was diagnosing a sound issue, and just happened to leave it set at those levels.

It was reported during the alphas that some settings got clobbered in the upgrade from 1.03. for instance, one of the users lost his dimmer settings. If you reset the settings (for the home and car personalities), they will stay properly in the future.

Hey, you've got it easy. I lost all my EQ bands in one of the alpha upgrades. At least your EQs are still there.

Heh. Nothing critical. I just happened to have loaded a CD for a friend (by Portishead), and just figured the music was supposed to sound like that, never having heard them before. Then I was playing with the new features of the rotary control (the push to access sound menus) and discovered the loudness setting.

I lost my dimmer setting too. It was ok in the house, but the first time in the car it came up at 0%, it was always 100% before.

No problems after a reset of the setting.

Saw the same thing tonight after the upgrade as well. Loudness at 13, dimmer at 0% with lights on and off, beeps off, and EQ changed to 2.

I had the same thing, but my question is this...

Did they change the scale for the volume? After I turned the loudness down, and went to the flat curve on the EQ, I'm still about 20db too loud .

Normally, I listen at about -20db, pushing it to ~-10db if I have the top open, and windows down at about 90+ mph. Past that and it's just silly loud.

Now, I'm listening at about -40db. Have I missed something here? Did we somehow increase the voltage on the outputs? (I'm asking semi-rheotorically... My Alpine with 4v outs played at about this level when the gains were about this level.)

I did tell it to cap at 0db in the configuration... Surely this isn't changing it that much?

I noticed no difference between the volume level of 1.03 and 2.0.

Since my EQ settings are "all cuts", my player is a lot louder when the EQs are flat. But when I set my EQs the same between 1.03 and 2.0, they sound the same.

It's probably me. I went and changed the cap back, no difference.

But I did push the volume up, and it's not as loud as I was thinking it would be.

-20db in 2.0b3 seems to be louder than -20db in 1.03, but -10 appears to be about as loud (which is REAL loud)... But the scale does seem to be smoother than it previously was.... 40-20 is a smooth, gentle slope in 2.0, while 40-20 would be a very large gradient on 1.03... at -40 before, I could just barely hear it over the engine...

Difference in the decoding engine perhaps?

I had the same experience. I had forgotten that I had my fader was tweeked to the rear before the upgrade. after the upgrade it was neutral. Now its faded to the rear 2 bars again and I am back to listening at -20db. Maybe this was the case for you too?

I don't *THINK* that's the case... I'm using the rear outs to drive my sub.

I am pretty sure I'd notice if the sub was beating beating the crap out of me..

That's not the way a fader works. When the fader is in the center position, the front and back are at full volume. When you fade to the back, the front speakers get quieter but the rear speakers stay the same.

So in your case, if the fader was accidentally set several notches to the rear, you would expect the overall volume to sound softer without an increase in the volume of the subwoofer.

Yes, but if the fader was pushed in that direction, I'd notice LESS volume. I'm noticing MORE.

I really don't THINK that my fader was originally shifted to the rear. I'm going to load 1.03 back on later today and see if it's just my imagination.

Anyways, the topend volume appears to be unchanged, it's the slope that ramps to that volume that I think has been changed.

This may be another problem unrelated to volume. It might be a per-track thing.

I just had a perfectly good MP3 file clip the ouputs: It was playing way too loud. Simply re-sending the exact same file to the player fixed it. Something about the FID data associated with the file not being correct, I think.

There's another thread about the player not liking "BMG" files where this is discussed.

Yeah... it was me.

I'm thinking that this may very well be the same problem. On some songs, it's playing to clipping, on others, it's volume is pushed up, but not to clipping...

I'm so stupid, I didn't look at the user names. I didn't realize it was you both times. You can shoot me now.
