slow tuner visuals - 19/10/2001 20:24

Tonight for the first time I used the visuals while in tuner mode and they seemed slugish.

That's probably because the tuner audio needs to be sampled first (and enough of it to do some decent analysis) before the visual can respond to it. So the visual can respond to the audio only a little while after you've already heard it. I don't think there's much that can be done about that.

Actually I was fishing to see if anyonelse had seen the same thing. I thought maybe it was a glitch or something on mine, apparently others don't do it.

Sure there is...just timeshift/cache the audio. Just like TiVo, this could provide for a pause feature, too.
I know these are lofty goals for the empeg team, but the hardware's there, right?

I had suggested this around the time the tuner came out... Hugo's response was that the hardware was NOT there... Basically, the only time the empeg SEEs the audio is when it's playing... therefore, it can't record anything unless it's actively playing it. It would be possible to PAUSE the radio (by muting the outs, but still playing), but it would only be an illusion, as the moment you started playing the cache, it would be unable to record the live.... therefore, when you reached the end of the cached data, it would skip to live.

*sigh*... it would have been nice....

OK, but my original question was did anyone have the same thing happen with theirs?

We don't do well with original questions here... it's too easy to go off-topic....

But, to answer your question, I haven't NOTICED it on mine, but I also don't spend much time in tuner mode... Mainly long enough to get the news and weather, and occasionally talk radio... none of which would really be enhanced by visuals...

My bad my original post wasn't a question was it.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 21/10/2001 19:54

Since the pitchforks and torches are all stirred up, do you think it would do be worthwhile to retarget them and storm the castle anyway just to encourage this much needed feature? (the Replay/TiVO "jump-back 7 seconds" ability that is)

...even if it required some additional hardware--oh, how it would be welcomed--so what if it did revert to live after a short skip back. Then I could catch that daggone traffic report that I missed because I wasn't paying close enough attention.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 21/10/2001 21:52

Maybe Patrick could come up with the hardware for that. Does he still read this board? Are you out there? I would pay 150 - 200 dollars for something like that.

200 bucks for Patrick to read the board!!

what an offer

Damn. I must be really tired to be typing things like that. I meant I would pay 200 for a tivo like buffer thingy.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 21/10/2001 23:42

Correct, the hardware is not there. We could sample and jump back, but this would loose you the live radio whilst you were listening to the replay - which means it's not a lot of good unless you hit the "jump back" button *after* the entire traffic report.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 22/10/2001 06:01

After reading the BBs for so long, I SHOULD be able to answer this myself, but what about sending tuner audio (either from Tuner Module or another external tuner) through AUX IN? Could that be sampled and played back at the same time (Is there a patent on such a thing yet?), or does AUX IN have the same limitation as tuner audio?

It does.

AARgh! Well, I know at least Microphone in can be sampled! It's got to be, right? After the sampling is done, the timeshifting & outputting the audio should follow easily. No, the freq response isn't ideal, but it's only radio, after all...

How have you worked that one out?
Actually unlike the tuner, the aux in can be sampled independently of what you're currently listening to.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 22/10/2001 09:16

The visuals should not appear sluggish in tuner mode. Please be more specific about what you mean/which visual you were watching/exactly what was sluggish about them.

The data is sampled at 29400 from the tuner which is effectively an analogue stream at the point it is sampled. You should notice a minimum of 1/38 second delay, and a maximum of 1/19 second. In theory you should never notice a delay of more than 1/38 seconds. During mp3 playback the data is delayed which means you don't even get the 1/38 second delay.

Unfortunately because of the way the thing is wired up tuner sampling is volume scaled by the overall player volume, you may find that you get better results with the volume set to 0db, as at -30db the signal is 1/1000 of the original. The code automatically gain controls the input signal, but if that is very small, then the results will not be good.

Good God, man.... I'd be too frickin shell shocked to pay attention to the visuals at that level!!!!!!!

That does explain a bit of the visual situation on the tuner tho....

I think that's kinda cool! Good designing, it's logical!

Hi Toby.

I stand corrected. Sorry for this.
I was under the impression that the tuner as well as the AUX in could be samped independently of what you are listening to, but at a low quality.
Well, looks as if I was wrong, and this is only the case for the AUX input.

Re: slow tuner visuals - 23/10/2001 00:36

The reason is that the tuner comes into the box as FM multiplex, and needs to go through the DSP (and hence to the speakers) in order to split it into left/right.

In *theory* you could hook the multiplex signal up to aux in externally and get a mono sample of the current radio without affecting the currently playing audio, but it may be the wrong level and adversely affect biasing of the real FM/AM input. I've not tried it.

So what kind of bribe would be required to get you to try this?...?

Re: slow tuner visuals - 23/10/2001 08:11

I wouldn't say the tuner visuals look sluggish, but there is a definite difference in the "amplitude" of FM and AM signals. With all of my AM stations, the visuals are very "violent" and jumpy (for instance, Clock Dist bounces around quite nicely) but with FM, they are much tamer. Is there a difference in the perceived volume of FM and AM signals as far as the Empeg is concerned? I thought one of my FM stations might be broadcasting at a lower volume, but it's that way for all my FM stations. The difference is very noticable, where the FM signals are almost flat, the AM ones are very active. Any comments?

Thank you finally someone who says he doesn't see it. Now I can find out where mine is faulty. It acts like my PC when too many threads are running and resources are getting low.
