2.0b7: Search Insert Ignored

2.0b7: Search Insert Ignored - 03/02/2002 21:00

This only happens sometimes, but occasionally the search feature pretends to insert, but does not.

Usually, this problem is preceded with a long hour glass on the search.

Turns out this is probably related to the fact that I've previously inserted a playlist, and "insert" will place the song after the last inserted list. Don't know why the hourglass, but maybe it's a coincidence.

A future release will hopefully have two different kinds of inserts: The current behavior will probably be renamed to something called "enqueue", and the "insert" option will become the always-immediate-after-this-song insert.

Will we also get 'shuffle into remaining playing order' option?

Yes, Tony, will we?

This option (someone called it Blend in the other thread about this) sounds kind of nice, but (a) it makes no sense unless shuffle is turned on, and (b) if the current Insert - Append - Replace were joined by Queue and Blend, the UI might start to get a bit out of control, especially in search windows where you can only choose a mode by cycling through all of them.

edit: It turns out that that someone was this thread's very own jloew.

I have no idea, sorry.

Ah but this can work!

Search won't need Blend because it only ever returns ONE song. I would even argue that Append and Queue are unnecessary as search modes because, if I'm searching, I want to hear it NOW. And I bet no one ever really wants to Replace from search. So, there you have it - one mode for search: Insert.

Blend would only show up in Playlist menu if Shuffle is on. There is no need for "Insert" since this behaves as Queue right now anyway. But, if you want to add a true Insert, that would be cool too.

Search doesn't always return just on song.

I can insert (or append or replace) nearly half my tunes by doing a search on Genre, for instance.

Search doesn't always return just on song.

OK, I'm an idiot new user. I didn't realize you could search by anything other than title.

Well then, the rest of my assertion still applies. :-) For search by Title, the only option would be Insert, but for search by Genre you have the full set of options (where Blend is only present if shuffle=on).

Better?

BTW, that genre wouldn't be Country, would it? :-P

Blast! Caught out again!

Actually I made up the bit about half my collection, anyway.
