Today it occurred to me that if the HD icon was down one line, I'd be able to see all of the currently playing song, which is the one I really care about.

Can that be done?

There is no way to change the on-screen position of the hard disk icon. You may turn it off completely, if you wish. For normal player operation, you don't usually need to know what the hard disk is doing. It's mostly only useful for debugging info.

Do we know what this one is now?

"The disk is spun-up, not because we're currently using it, but because the last time we spun it down we had to spin it up again almost straightaway, and we're not getting caught with our pants down like that again."

If you see it occasionally, it's a symptom of your own indecisiveness about what to listen to but if you see it continuously, it's a symptom that you haven't really got enough cache-memory, so you need more memory (or less music).

If the player didn't have this feature, there'd be certain cache sizes (i.e. certain database sizes) at which the player would perpetually be either spinning down or spinning up the disk, which would do the disk even more harm than being permanently spun-up.
