I have found a ide to compact flash https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036DDXUM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and I have been advised to use this compact flash, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NUB2TWI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but it only goes to 128gb and I would like to use 256gb since tony said its better to you use one drive at the highest you can get.I dont knowif this would work, but its $200 https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-CompactFlash-Memory-SDCFXPS-128G-X46/dp/B00ECEVGN0/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1QPCQDDNO3JGO&dchild=1&keywords=sandisk+extreme+cf+card&qid=1614812561&sprefix=sandisk+extre+cf+card%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-2 Since I use very high bit rate, flac and wav(if empeg can use wav). I am really big into sound quality not as much as quantity. Both is good though. I also found one by lexor for 256gb, but it is pricy. https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Professiona...;th=1&psc=1 Here it is

I am actually looking for the right kind of Compfact Flash card that would work best with the ide to CF convertor If anyone has any experience with this area and know exactly type of card to use it would be a great help. I have cards for $20 for 128gb, but didnt know if they are the same type of card.

Thanks, Nicholas Muehlberger

The card simply has to be a "CompactFlash" card. Not any other type. And 128GB is the practical limit for use in the empeg, though one can get away with TWO cards, each 128GB in capacity.

I read somewhere that someone was using two 160gb ide harddrives in their empeg. It may gave them some problems, but i would have less songs just at a higher bit rate. so I was thinking a 256gb and down the road a 64gb or 128gb. also I heard from tfabris that using one higher gig drive verses 2 smaller would be better. So using a 256gb instead of 2 128gb drives. Do you know if this is true and if it is, why it is true?

by the way all of the drives I am talking about are "Compactflash" or CF not compactfast or Cfast.

Yes, I am repeating myself. For good reason!

Mark is the author of widely used hdparm utility and the Linux IDE guy, as well as the author of the Hijack kernel (which he reportedly only did to increase his forum post count) and the big disk builder image that you will need to build these drives.

He can be expected to be authoritative on this subject.

The acquired experience of empeg owners over the years, suggested STRONGLY that any single drive larger than about 128GB was troublesome in several ways.

Eg. The empeg player would run out of RAM trying to manage the filesystem metasdata, the AUX partition on the drive for the current running order etc. would also be too small for some things.

You can try and search these forums for specific success and horror stories and decide for yourself. But with fewer of us around now to help with stuff, and with memories of details/solutions fading, it will be more difficult to get things working reliably than in the past.

It could well be that the issues with larger drives may be somewhat mitigated by the zero seek-times of SSDs (eg. CF cards), and that some things may be more feasible than before.

I don't know much about that. My fuzzy grey cells simply remind me never to go beyond 128GB/drive if things are to be kept simple.

Cheers
