Aren't the 60s taller than 9.5mm? I was under the impression we couldn't use an drives taller than that.

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 08/12/2002 00:44

I feel I must add, that while the Hard drive upgrade guide says 19.5mm... this was in a recent email from David concerning my player:

"It looks like the large 5GB drive in the player was too heavy and put extra weight on the connector when the player fell.

I also noticed that the drive touches the lid of the player - this may reduce the effectiveness of the shock mounts."

I don't have the exact measurements of the drive. But it appeared to be double the size of the 9.5mm 30GB Fujitsu drive. Again, I am not positive on the height of the drive. Just as a warning. But I did have it running very well for 6+ months, until I dropped my precious. But it was the drop that caused the damage.

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 09/12/2002 17:48

OK, I'm fixin to pull the trigger on a new HD does anyone know:

1. If the Toshiba HD being 9.5mm will cause a proble (I'd go for the $200 deal but I prefer new vs. fixed).

2. When exactly will the 80giggers be out? I plan on syncing with the central (currently 120GB) so the 80 would definately be preferable since I've got a 30GB mk2a now; since 80 + 30 would be 110 and after installing a 120GB drive in the Central I only get 112 GB worth of space.

Thanks....

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 09/12/2002 18:20

Greetings!

9.5 mm is definately not a problem. I personally use the IBM ones, but that is because they were on the market faster.

I expect the 80GB drives will be out in the late January timeframe. IBM's press release is saying that is the target for retail markets. I expect that a) it will take a while to actually get them shipping in retail vendors, maybe February, b) Dell and other OEMs will be the first to get and sell them as upgrades to existing laptops and c) they will be mighty expensive (guessing around $490 per) when they first come out.

Keep in mind that 80 is the advertised size of the drive, referring to 80,000,000,000 bytes. Meaning that emplode will probably see it (rough guess, more mathier people than I can work out the details) as about 74GB. Still, I assume the same would apply to the Central, so as long as your comparing similar numbers...

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 09/12/2002 18:38

Keep in mind, that is just a guess. I am basing it on what the 60s were when they first came out. If you want, two 60s will get you to that 120GB point, if it is within range. The price point is going to be much lower than the 80s.

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 09/12/2002 18:44

I think for now I'll get buy with the existing 30 and adding a 60. I've got about 50GB worth of tunes so that'll leave about 40gigs for now. Maybe next year I'll be ready for an 80 or preferable something large than that by then.

Also the 80s will drop in price as soon as something bigger comes along or Toshiba can match it.

Re: 60 GB Drives $295.00 - 09/12/2002 19:42

OK, the Toshiba's appear to be backordered and according to CDW aren't supposed to be out til January. I'm in the market for a 60gig drive. Have you ever dealt with this website before? Any idea how you might coordinate a 3person buy like this??

Nevermind, this guy in the Netherlands with his member since September 11, 2002 give me the creeps. I'll pay $100 more to a US company any day.

Thanks,

Well, looks like the 40 is going to be what's available for a reasonable price. I've looked though where did you find this price? I can only find 120.95 on dells site. Is there a coupon or something I need?

Just talked to an IBM employee... I guess IBM sold all hard drive manufacturing (desktop and notebook) to Hitachi... will this impact us at all?
