Thanks!

I think, however, the link to the emplode-beta7 file isn't quite right...

Epic. Excellent stuff. Thank you.

Slight problem: no PPP support. Wouldn't it make sense to make a modular
kernel with PPP as a module? Presumably, since you have various device drivers
such as the dsp that you can't release as source code due to NDAs then you
must release these as modules since linking into the kernel would violate
the GPL anyway.

Excellent release - and I was even able to install it using Virtual PC! (now if only I could synchronize my playlist using Virtual PC... but oh well...)

One comment on the hierarchical playlists, though: one of the things I liked about the old playlists is that, when you hit the Playlists menu, it started you on the playlist you were currently playing. It doesn't do that anymore, instead starting you on the "play" button for the top-level (empeg-car) playlist every time you hit the "Playlist" menu. I can understand the necessity of this, since there is no "up" button inside the sub-playlists as far as I could tell, but wouldn't it make more sense to have the following?

1) an "up" button in every playlist
2) a "top" button in every playlist which would zap you up to the "empeg-car" playlist (with the "play" button selected)

This way, if I'm listening to sub-playlist A in playlist X, and I want to listen to sub-playlist B in playlist X, I only have one keypress to get to playlist X, rather than a navigation through the entire top level to get to playlist X...

I also have a "bug" (which may not in fact be a bug), which existed in beta 6 as well, but I'll post it in "bug reports" (and send it to [email protected]), as is standard procedure...

After last night's release of beta7 a set of Linux tools is available for upgrading and downloading music to your empeg-car. This release is binary only but we hope to release the source code shortly.

These tools form part of the beta7 release and can be found on the beta7 donwload page at http://www2.empeg.com/upgrades/.

Please email [email protected] with bug reports and [email protected] for technical support.

The kernel isn't modular for boot-time simplicity & speed. We may well do releases with stuff like PPP modular (and supplied in the developer image) in future though. The DSP stuff is all in the kernels, just that we can't explain to anyone what the hex values mean (sad, but true. Actually, for a lot of them they're just magic values that we don't understand either).

The patches against SA1100 2.2.12 have just gone off to Nico, so look for a new release of that soon.

I've put a PPP kernel in http://www2.empeg.com/upgrades/tools/pppkernel7.upgrade
