remove me - 23/05/2000 06:54

How do I go about getting myself removed from the waiting list for an empeg? Since joining quite a while back, I have recieved maybe 3 updates and none of them telling me where I am on the list. I have decided that rather then wait for another year or two, I will go a different route, and I don't want to take up a waiting list slot that can be used for someone that is still interested in buying an empeg.
Thanks,
Eryk

The mailing list goes out to everyone - you will have had a registration number if you're on the list, which is your position in the queue - and you definitely won't be waiting another year for an empeg!

If you want to alter/remove yourself from the registration list (or check your queue number - you might even be in the first batch of mk2 units which will start to ship in the next month), mail [email protected].

If you're really interested in the empeg, hang in there! I may not be rich, but what out there could possibly be an acceptable substitute for the empeg?

Besides, as Hugo said, it doesn't look like it's gonna be too much longer.

BTW, Hugo, approx how many units to you guys have to build to clear the back log? (or how many do you expect to have to build?)

I understand your disappointment in having to wait so long, and I respect what you're saying. But consider hanging in there a few more months. The Empeg is worth it. Now that I own one, I can't imagine having ever used any other kind of car stereo. Any other in-dash MP3 solution just won't compare to it.

Ok...you guys have convinced me. I will wait it out and see whats happening. :) I will probably still purchase another portable player though, as I dont want to actually drag the empeg everywhere, even though I have been told this is possible. (such as my upcoming trip to england) .

Thanks all

Hey,

If you're eager to get a player right-away, you might want to consider a second-hand player. I'm selling mine on Ebay, and it's currently going for just $856 with less then a day left in the auction.

Hey, I'm in San Jose with one of the prototype mk2's (doing FCC testing). I take it everywhere with me, and it works just fine with a tape adaptor for the hire car ;)

If some of us California bay area types offered to buy you lunch and drinks could you be coerced into giving us a quick demo ;-)

Hey, I'm headed for the Bay area this weekend, Hugo. Will you still be in San Jose this weekend?

Cool. I'm going to try to contact you via direct e-mail. I'll be in San Jose all weekend at the Doubletree hotel on Gateway place, near the intersection of Technology Drive and US101. If I can find out where you're going to be, I'll try to track you down. That is, if you don't mind giving a quick demo of that Mark2 prototype.

Of course. But only if I get Hugo's OK on it, and only if I can work out a visit. I'm sure we're both going to be pretty busy, so I don't know if it's going to work out or not. We'll see.

Tony,

Why don't you arrange to meet Hugo, hide around a corner, and when he's not expecting it kick him in the nuts. Then you can grab the prototype and run like hell!

James.

Re: remove me - 25/05/2000 14:09

That wouldn't be prudent.

Above and beyond the fact that it's evil and I would never do such a thing, there are some logistical problems with that course of action. To do so would delay the release of the Mark 2. Considering the number of persons on the waiting list, anyone responsible for such an action would be hunted down by thousands of rabid empeg fans. No thanks.

Of course he was kidding. Hence the smiley-face icon accompanying the message.

Re: remove me - 25/05/2000 15:48

The player that Hugo's running through FCC approval doesn't have the new handle and plastic (we don't get the first shots until Tuesday) so photos wouldn't be very interesting.

Hugo says that the prototype doesn't have the new plastic work on the face yet, so it pretty much just looks like a Mk1. Pics would probably be useless. I'm mainly interested in seeing the state of the software, what functions have been assigned to the knob, what the VR is like, etc. (And I'm interested in meeting Hugo, too, of course.) If it's OK with Hugo, I'll report on that stuff here, but only if he gives me the OK and most likely only with the disclaimer that it's not finished yet.

Tony,

If you guys manage to set something up and don't mind including me (seeing as how I mentioned it in the first place and all) can you drop me an email ([email protected])? I would be excited to meet you guys anywhere in the Bay Area for a quick Empeg demo and to say hi.

Re: remove me - 25/05/2000 23:29

Maybe you could also take photos from the back of the Mk2 so that we could see where the connectors are placed (could be important for mounting it into the car.

(But hopefully it won't be a problem in my car cause I've seen the video of the empeg 1 and it seems not to have such a big depth. I've checked the technical details from the empeg but I didn't check the possible depth in my car. But my current tapedeck seems to be much larger in depth than the empeg is..)

Re: remove me - 27/05/2000 15:45

Hi,

I just created a new topic with the pic I took of the back of the MK2. See 'A pic or two...'. The unit itself is not nearly as deep as I have always assumed it would be. I doubt you would have a problem.

Re: remove me - 28/05/2000 13:29

How did you connect the power and tape adapter? Just use straight 12v from the cigarette lighter, fuse? And i assume you had to make an adapter to go from RCA to the tape adapter.

Anything in particular or is it as easy as i would imagine?

thanks.

He actually borrowed the tape adapter from me so I'll answer :-) I actually wrote a proper installation report about it a year or so ago.

The tape adapter was a relatively cheap and nasty one (well, not that cheap it was around eight quid IIRC). It has a "bass boost" button which has serious trades description act problems in that it appears from taking it apart to be a normally open bass filter :-)

Anyway, Hugo kindly chopped the 3.5mm jack off the end and replaced it with two phonos with only one ground connection (since there is a common ground inside the empeg on the 1V outputs).

The power adapter is a simple cigarette to power plug adapter with extra insulating tape as you assumed.

The sound quality is actually rather good compared to tape. I'm sure a correctly wired amp etc. would sound much better but since I drive very little it usually serves my purposes. The only disadvantage is that the unit believes it is at home rather than in the car - this isn't a problem since I need to run at 0dB for the tape adapter anyway.

Re: remove me - 28/05/2000 15:22

I am currently using a Radio Shack 12V power adaptor that came with several power tips, an RCA to 1/8inch headphone stereo jack, then a gender changer to plug in the Sony tape adaptor to the empeg. The Sony tape adaptor is the only one I found to work in my stereo, as it has a little piece of plastic in part of it to fool my stereo into thinking it has a tape in it. It rejected the one I used in my old car for a short time.

Overall the quality is below the CD player in the car, but above tape. I just can't wait to get the Mark II and have an amp again though. The quality was so much better.
