Mark II Faceplate and purchase window

Mark II Faceplate and purchase window - 02/06/2000 00:56

I just realized something about the Mark II volume knob position... it's not on the left side of the unit like all other units i've ever seen... just thought i'd point out my tendancy to think everyone lives in america and has the steering wheel on the left and drives on the right side of the road (read correct and 'right') :)

also... i am the unfortunate owner of #14k+... i know some of the numbers will not be used to purchase empegs... i am curious once my number is up, how long will i have to place my order? i am slowly (but surely) putting the money together for this purchase... if my number is up and i don't have the money at that exact moment will i be placed at the end of the queue?

As far as I understood it works the following way:

If you are invited to order a unit and you can't afford it at this moment you can order a unit later. If you order your unit and all produced units are sold then you'll have to wait till the next batch is ready. But whta the guys@empeg say they want to serve all the registered persons with a unit till about end of this summer and after that come to a state where you are able to buy an empeg from stock.

Hope I'm right - anyone correct me if not.

Here is my take on it...

The first batch is going to be offered to the original owners of the Mk 1s (probably in their original first-sold-first-served basis). The original owners have the option of purchasing a Mk 2 (with discount & goodies) or, if they sold their Mk 1, pass the offer onto the second owner. From what I've read the offer is ONLY good for the first batch. If you can't buy a Mk 2 when your number is up then you must either re-queue or wait until the queue is caught up.

Am I correct on this Rob?

You're right that original owners will get the chance to buy a Mark 2 from the first batch before anyone else, and if they pass this up then they'll have to wait til we clear the backlog if they subsequently decide they want one.

However, I would point out that we expect less than a hundred upgrades, and the first batch is 1000 players, so lots of new clients will get their players during June as well.

I believe a second batch of 1000 players will be close behind the first with just a short delay - we want to clear this backlog quickly!

We've used British spelling in the user guide as well :-)

So, starting in June with the first 1000, and you guys getting 1000 every two weeks to a month, those of us in the 14k range should get our chance somewhere in the December timeframe (14000 people / 2000 per month = 7 months from June).

I know that everyone in the queue won't order, but this seems like it might be the worse-case scenario.

Yet on the new site you say "no more boxes in the trunk" not "boot" ;)

The web site is a compromise - where possible we've used whichever words will be understood by the widest audience. It's my experience that most Americans don't know what a "boot" is (in the car context!) but most non-American English speakers do know what a "trunk" is, thanks to Hollywood!

No, there's no chance it'll work out like that. If we really did get that many orders we'd increase the batch size to cope, but in practice I'm sure that 2000 orders will clear the current backlog of clients who wish to order right away.

One way or another you should be able to order from stock by September, assuming the cellphone industry deign to leave some components for other people to buy.

Thanks, Rob.

Also, thanks for my word for the day -- "deign". Neat!

Re: Mark II Faceplate and purchase window - 02/06/2000 09:00

I just wish I knew a rough estimate of how many people were in the queue. I'm something like 13600. So if you're starting at 6500 and there's like 14200 or something, I'll obviously be at the end of the summer (not good, I hope I'll be able to get one then). But if you're starting at 6500 and going to 20000, then that would be good.

I know I have no control over it either way, but I just wish I knew how long I had to wait. I don't mind waiting 3 months if I know it's going to be 3 months.

It's funny, though, because I seem to not be buying anything that's in stock these days. I waited 9 weeks for my set of Klipsch ProMedia speakers, I'm waiting for my new van to be built and then delivered somewhere arounf the end of the month, and now I have the empeg! At least I knew how long I had to wait for the others!

To make things even more interesting, remember that it isn't JUST your queue position. Its also how many people in front of you didn't do the Registration Confirmation. Then, out of those people that confirmed their registration, how many are going to balk when its there turn? I don't think anybody can tell, except for letting us know the percentage of people who DIDN'T confirm the registration. :)

Jambo --

Another thing to factor in is past history.

Remember that the original queue got up to just past 6,000 -- but only 400 people in the queue actually purchased their Mark I empegs.

If the same ratio holds true for the Mark II, then your queue number might come up about 15 times faster than your worst case scenario.

Don't forget the deferred orders -- I'm in the low 5000's, deferred my order, and plan to get one of the Mark2's from the first batch.

Re: Mark II Faceplate and purchase window - 05/06/2000 06:00

Hopefully for your company it'll be more than only 2000 units to clear backlog.
Could you say the total amount of people registered in the new registration?
I think there will be a higher percentage to order a unit cause the new registration is not so long ago and I think most of the people registered now are really interested in buying a unit.

I know another 2 - 3 persons who would be interested in a Mk2 but don't really believe that the Mk2 will be produced in higher rates and will not be >handmade< (their opinion, not mine!). And I think many other people are thinking that way. But when they see that you are producing more pieces - depending on the orders, of course they maybe will think about ordering a player, too.

I missed ordering a player about 1 year ago (*shi..*) but now I really wnat to have one and don't want to miss the invitation. By the way - how many invitations have you sent now? ;-)

Hopefully you'll soon get to Reg#948.. :-)))
Wanna spend some money.

2000 actual sales from the current queue would be fine by me. When the product was first thought up, Hugo evisaged selling only about 100 players!

Re: Mark II Faceplate and purchase window - 06/06/2000 18:18

I am mid 5000s, so there's a good chance I'll be invited to place an order in June?

BTW, I like what I heard in another thread about next-day shipping to North America.

p.s.: DIGNAN -- also have a set of the Klipsch ProMedias. KICK ASS.

Awesome man! don't those speakers just kick so much ass?

How long was your wait? I got on the list like the second day of the backorder (stupid me). Did you get yours before that or after?

Aye. I've never needed to turn them past 1/3 yet -- they're so clear and loud. Easily one of the 10 best hardware purchases I have ever made (the empeg I expect will make the list as well) -- and the best thing is, they'll outlive every other piece of computing equipment I have, AND are more than sufficient to fill a living room in a home-theatre setup.

Hmm...I read a preview about them, and forgot all about 'em until they magically appeared at a local London Drugs in the OEM brown-box that accompanied some Compaq machines. Forget when I got them. February maybe?

...and returning more to an empeg oriented message:

I would not for a moment have any doubts about the ability to provide entertainment at my next party with the empeg and these Klipsch speakers.
