Scary - 11/03/2003 11:51

So, a friend left his car off at my house and I gave him a ride to the airport yesterday morning. This morning, at about 2am his car was broken into. They took his stereo (a Kenwood MP3/CD player), and a scanner (that is worthless - it was scheduled for destruction next week (i.e. he was going to use it for target practice)).

I'm pissed that his car got broken into while it was at my house, even though he doesn't seem to mind nearly as much as I do. His first response was 'did they hit your car too?' knowing about the empeg. They didn't, even though it was less than 20ft from his car. The only explanation is the car and that it was in my driveway. He seems to think the blinking light on the empeg might've kept them away, I'm not sure.

One thing I do know, my average for bringing the empeg inside with me at home just went from about 25% of the time to 100%.

I hope more empeg owners take heed.

My condolences to your friend, I've had two break-ins (pre-empeg), and both made me feel humiliated and violated.

Why would your empeg blinky light be on all night? Do you have it set to some astronomical time?

It never turns off as long as its plugged into the car. I would leave the empeg in the car for days on end up until today.

So it's wired to the constant power instead of the ignition-switched power? Don't you get really awful pops from the amp when you turn off the ignition?

Re: Scary - 11/03/2003 13:19

None at all. I assumed everything was installed correctly (took it to a really high-end installer), except for the dimmer, which they didn't hook up. So the blinky light is suppose to turn off?

If it's a Mark 2, and it's wired correctly, then yes.

Aww jeez another reason for me to not move back to the Phoenix area, the criminals are too dumb to know a good thing when they see it.Looks like you got a cheap lesson... (Cheap because it didn't take the loss of the empeg to realize it's safer inside with you.)

Yes. It sounds like your ``really-high end installer'' is unable to read directions.

In all likelihood, the constant power of the car is attached to the switched power of the empeg, and possibly vice versa.

There's info about this sort of thing in the FAQ (and the manual, for that matter), but, in general, the empeg will totally turn off after a few minutes (configurable). While the LED is blinking, it's in a standby mode.

I didn't care for even the "few minutes" of flashing for the (rare!) occasions where I leave the unit in the car. I used the HiJack option to disable the flashing and I'm much happier now. I prefer the flashless operation in the house, too, because that LED is very bright.

Yeah, I had my car broken into a few years after I got out of high school. Fortunately, I had a Kenwood pullout at the time that I had taken inside for the night (I never normally did this, just lucky timing). However they did get my Amplifiers and EQ. The feeling I had was as close as I can imagine to what a woman feels after being raped, not good at all. That feeling lingered for quite a while as I remember it. It turned out that the culprit was one of my younger brother's freinds (he got what was coming to him, if you know what I mean), but I never recovered my goods :-(.

Nifty, I didn't know that. I generally skip over the install parts of manuals and the FAQ because I shouldn't be allowed near wiring/electricity anyway

You know, I wonder about this. I wired mine correctly and it still has the glowing led.

When I turn the car off, the empeg also turns off most of the time. http://empeg.comms.net/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=wishlist&Number=145564&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart= (bbs would not let me use this url with the url tag)
