eMpeg Dead(ish) - 25/05/2003 07:50

The other day my unit intermittently would stop working. When this happened last time, I attached the hard drive with the second of the connectors on the cable.

This time at home on closer investigation the hard drive is ticking when the unit tries to boot up + hard disk not found logo. I swapped it over for another unformatted drive, and I got the same thing. Both drives check out ok.

Solder on IDE connector on the mainboard look ok. I'm checking out the rest of the faq, but if anyone else has any pointers in the meantime I would appreciate the help. If it is the bespoke cable, what options are there for getting a replacement?

Regards,
Alexander

Just email support (address is in FAQ somewhere). I don't know if they'll charge for it now or not.

just note that you won't get a response from support for an unspecified amount of time. Some people have been waiting months. Apparently the cable can be custom made, someone's had it done but i can't find the thread at the moment. Just make sure you reclamp the connectors onto the cable as hard as you can. You might also want to post the shell output from a terminal into this thread so we can see if there's anything weird going on. The FAQ has an entry on how to do this with hyperterminal.

I wonder if one of the guys doing custom empeg electronic bits would be willing to commission a small run of the appropriate length cable since this seems to be coming up a lot and support seams to have (mostly) ceased to exist.

Well I've sent an e-mail to support.

If anyone can do the cables, I'll probably order half a dozen of them!
