Now my player is dead aaahhh

Now my player is dead aaahhh - 17/09/2003 20:42

I posted a few minutes ago about upgrading a drive this is a different player.

I dropped my player it landed on carpet upside down. I plugged it in and tried emplode it worked fine. Then I decided to run the 2.0 upgrade the upgrade started then got an error.(sorry I don't know what the error was)

Now when I plug the player in I get the flashing led and the display is blank. All I get for a log from hyperterminal is this.

If there is anyone present who wants to upgrade the flash, let them speak now,
or forever hold their peace...it seems not. Let fly the Penguins of Linux!

I checked the display is not cracked and the nipple is not broken off. I pulled out the drive mount and checked the connectors.

Any suggestions ?

Hopefully it just means you've only lost the kernel. That string is the boot loader which is in protected flash.
Can you try the upgrade again? And if it gives an error then write it down

I tried that now the upgrade doesn't find the player.

You need to disconnect the power and apply it when it tells you to. Otherwise it can't find it properly

I just plug it in when the program says to apply power.

I think there may be a broken wire on the display cable (it looks squished anyway) Does anyone know if I can unplug the cable from the display side then I can try to ohm it out. Would that cause a problem like this even ?

I really don't wanna unplug it though because I will probably get it plugged in wrong.

Loose drive cable on main board.

Broken display - shake unit to check if the nipple is rattling around loose.

Broken #1 conductor in display unit (left side with stripe).

I think it's the broken conductor on the display. Does the cable come unplugged from the display side ?

No, but you can patch the broken conductor inline, without needing to replace the entire cable.

There is a FAQ entry and images on the RIOCAR site (see speedlink). Alternatively, you can send the display unit in for either repair or complete exchange unit to [email protected]

I would be surprised if problems with the display ribbon connector caused an upgrade to fail. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd think that all the software would continue to work and you'd just have a blank display.

I find it interesting that neither this player, nor the one you're trying to drive-upgrade, can be seen by the upgrader software. In other words, you're getting the same symptom from the player you dropped as well as the player you didn't drop.

This, to me, sounds like it's a problem with the PC, with the serial port, or with the serial cable.

It's interesting that hyperterminal works enough to show you the boot logs, but perhaps the receive wire is working but the transmit wire is not? Or something like that.

This player was seen by the upgrade program but it failed after the upgrade started. I think it failed because the player went dead.

Ok Tony's right I checked the display cable for continunity and it was fine. Now I plugged the secondary connector on the IDE cable to the motherboard and a spare drive to the primary connector on the IDE cable. When I run drive builder on I get the error "couldn't find pump" occurred during stage 0x20.

Anyone know what this error means ?

I tried a different IDE cable and re-downloaded the drive builder I still get the same error. I also tried a different PC.

It can mean a few different things, all of which have already been discussed in this thread.

I also tried a different PC.
Did you try a different serial cable?
