Dead tuner!

Dead tuner! - 20/12/2003 08:33

Ok, my tuner seems to be dead. In the last week I experienced some signal losses. Simply, the signal strenght would decrease down to two or one on the signal strength bar. Then it would come back up after two or three seconds, and after a RDS rescan, usually. Last night the signal strength decreased to never come back up.

So this morning I went to my firend installer and we spent almost two hours trying to find out what the problem was.

- The extension cable is streight
- The antenna is powered (in fact it has been working fine so far)
- The antenna and the antenna cable is ok, as tested with another regular tuner connected to it

The tuner now seems not to receive anything. Only a very very weak signal once in a while.

I am using alpha 3

The tuner is an original empeg one. I purchased second hand here after mine was stolen, and it seemed pretty new. It had been installed only once for test purposes, supposedly. We also opened it and the only thing we noticed is what seems to be some rust (?!), which should not be there, I believe (what do you think?): that radio has been installed in my new car since September, and no humidity was around it...

Other than that, I don't know what to do/think.

Looks like something might have been spilled on it..?

Greetings!

That rust bothers me. Either it was something very strong (thinking acid or equivalent) or it was exposed to water repeatedly or for a long time.

That's my opinion - even though I am not an expert at all - Paul. I am really disappointed.
The tuner has been installed in my new car just behind the empeg and was wrapped into a protective foam. The foam was dry, as well as the tuner, both inside and outside. I believe something must have happened before I purchased, at this point.

I am now trying to find out what the story fo this tuner was.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago.

My tuner is also dead. It would work for awhile until it got warmed up, then get static and would not tune. Mine also looks like it had some rust. I was thinking it looked like it was not properly bathed in the final stages of production. I've seen this before where the acidic nature of the flowing process can lead to corrosion if not properly washed. Anyway, I also thought I had read about some sort of problem with an opamp, but no one seems to remember.

So the problem could be related to production. Anyone from the Empeg team could confirm or deny this?
Do you have pics of it? Just curious to see that rust, too...
