Production Knobs and Buttons

Production Knobs and Buttons - 15/02/2004 19:01

I think we finally have some finished prototypes. The amber, blue, red, and smoke appear to be just right. The green is still a bit too yellow, so that will come later this week. Every thing fits now, as soon as we get the final price tomorrow, we'll place an order and hopefully have some to sell by the end of the week. I'll post pictures later.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 16/02/2004 20:32

Here's a picture with everything but red. Blue is just like Brian's now as is amber and red. I'm not sure about smoke, but I think it's close as well. The knob diffuses a bit better than Brian's while the buttons are about the same. Green is still being tweaked. Anyway, here are the production pieces. The picture looks a little blue, and over exposed. Everything looks much better in person.
Smoke is the knob. The top and right button are blue. The left button is the current green and the bottom button is amber. Enjoy!

Hmm.. anyone recommend some kinda diffuser for the buttons? I LOVE the blue, will probably order a FEW sets, but to go with my Mini's Interior, I need the light a little more diffused.. (Mind you, not that I'm COMPLAINING... I'll order them ANYWAYS..)

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 14:07

Nice work stu! What are the backs of the buttons like? I snagged a set of brian buttons at the amersfoort meet and I find I have to be careful not to push them too hard. The buttons push the leds into the switch leaving it stuck on. I then have to remove the facia and give the led a wiggle to free it off the switch.

Now I only have to get the "Empeg Illumination Kit"....

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 16:17

Thanks guys. I believe there's a little more clearance back there than what Brian's have (at least the set we have). I don't think it will be a problem with our buttons.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 17:14

I have not had this problem with any of the multitudes of Brian-Button installs. Perhaps the LEDs are not installed exactly right?

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 17:44

I think it was an issue with early buttons that Brian soon corrected.
Posted by: loren

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 18:46

Yeah, i got one of Brian's first sets, and i had to drill out the backs of the buttons a bit to make them work. But he corrected this with later sets.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 18:48

Another option is to dremel down the tops of the LEDs. There is a lot of curved plastic at the tops of the LEDs that isn't necessary. I just ground the tops off of my LEDs. Mostly for the additional diffusion, but it also helped buttons fit a touch better.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 17/02/2004 23:20

Very nice. My player is already enroute to Stu to get the glow, so I'm psyched!

I wonder about the green (as I have, annoyingly, all along). Stu, could you take a pic of my player with the current green buttons on it (when you finish the light install, of course)? Then, maybe take a pic of it with the new green buttons, if you have them on hand?

I ask because if the "old" greens seem to match better, I'd offer to buy the old set from you. And if the "new" greens seem better, I'd probably snatch up two sets!

If I'm way overstepping my bounds with these requests / questions, I'm sorry. Just slap me (but be nice to my empeg). Thanks again

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 18/02/2004 05:09

I can't wait for the buttons - just did the button and knob LED install on Monday evening. Top kit, nice and easy to do...well, once I had adjusted my eyes to see the exceedingly teeny components

I did come out of it with a slightly sore neck, but it was well worth it.

Now I just need buttons, so I'm there as soon as payday comes around!

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 18/02/2004 08:32

I suppose it's a bit late for this reminder, but the colour that matters, is the matching between the buttons and lens when BOTH are installed and illuminated. Not when the lens is viewed separately.. the lens colour "changes" on the player because the player does not emit white light.

Cheers

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 19/02/2004 08:34

Fully aware of that. We don't have the lenses here for photography, so it's rather moot. The blue is the same as Brian's blue as is the red and I believe the amber as well.

The first order has not arrived yet; it's late. Once it's here, we still need to take pictures before we'll sell it on the site. This all takes time. But, sure you can add an IDE cable to your order.

For anyone that wants to reserve a set of buttons and knobs, please e-mail "buttons.at.eutronix.com" with the model of Empeg you have and the color set you desire. We ordered 10 blue, 10 red, 5 amber, and 5 smoke. Green is still being tweaked.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 23/02/2004 17:17

I neglected to mention that the first batch is only for MK2As.
You could also offer a service to swap out the Mk2 rotary encoder for the Mk2a rotary encoder, so that folks with the Mk2s could get a quadruple-whammy of an upgrade: Light kit, clear buttons, new (not worn-out) encoder, and new (quieter click) type of encoder...

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 23/02/2004 23:57

Might as well bundle in a drive upgrade, digital out add on, fan upgrade, new set 'a drive sled screws, and a full exterior and interior detailing.

Hm, still tweaking the green, so maybe I should order a smoke while I'm waiting.

But on Mark's lense/button matching comment: Which lenses are these buttons being matched to? Original empeg, Darkstorm, or Filener? Or maybe the three are all similar enough so it will just work.

I won't be pickey. My dashboard, empeg, Alpine CD lights don't match perfectly, so oh well. Thanks again, can't wait for the glow.
Posted by: pgrzelak

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 24/02/2004 06:06

I would guess they are being matched to the original empeg lenses. But even then, you still have the cyan color of the VFD to deal with. The LEDs are white. You will almost always have a color difference between the buttons and VFD.

Thanks for the plug! We are unofficially replacing encoders. We've done one and it works fine, but we'd very much like to get a hold of the OEM model Alps encoder with .5mm of travel rather than the 1.5mm we have now, but Alps seems to deem the American market suited only for the 1.5mm ones. Anyway, we're still looking.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 08/03/2004 06:13

This one was my fault. I had sent sample buttons from my spare bits bin to have castings made. Unfortunately, I had sold my Mark2 long ago, so I only had one Mark2 knob to send. Because my Mark2 was an older variety, it had the old pre-fix knob on it. That's why I had a spare knob - I put the knob fix in place, and this was left over. The cast prototypes all slipped as badly or worse than the original.

Stu now has a correct (fixed) Mark2 knob to make a casting from, but it caused a bit of a delay.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 08/03/2004 08:38

Wouldn't you know it? Something was done rather poorly in the first run of parts and now it looks like all 150 pieces will have to be redone. The finish came out chalky and easy to scratch, which is not at all like the samples.

No it's not your fault that there aren't MK2 knobs Paul! The correct MK2 mold was made at the time the order was placed for the MK2A parts, but the decision was made (by me) to make only a small simple run with only MK2a parts in case a problem like this arose. We're going to raise hell with the supplier today, so hopefully this can be corrected in a timely fashion.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 09/03/2004 23:00

Not sure how to request them, but I just installed my LED kit tonight, it looks awsome and in dire need of the translucent buttons. Depending on price, I might want to order both blue and smoked. For now I just dremeled small holes into the original buttons like I saw done in a post a while ago.

BTW, I received my LED kit quickly. The kit was a bit of a challenge but went off without a hitch. Keep up the good work

Digging through each of the 150 pieces, it seems it was not a total loss. There are 7 red sets, and a couple amber (a little on the red side for some reason) that I feel comfortable selling. We'll be going through the list again and offering these until they're gone.

Does that mean they are more of an orange color then? If so I'd be interested in a set.

Yes, more orange. I'll see if we have any left to sell. Most sets had a piece or two I would classify as a second and we don't want to sell those.

Re: Production Knobs and Buttons - 19/03/2004 09:06

Thanks everybody! When we can get a steady flow of these going I'll let everybody know. The red is a very deep red when lit, but like any intense light, will appear whitish when viewed directly. It is less white when set at a lower level. The canera also had some effect on the pink look too I think.

::shudders:: Haha, here I'd been quietly telling myself three times a week:
"Don't worry, Stu is just seriously stocking up on buttons before the release; hoarding enough to survive the initial blitz and still sustain for a while. Why, I bet he's got 100 sets by now. Nothing to worry about. Now, don't check the BBS for three more days and maybe he'll have released them."

Haha, I know I'm causing the watched pot to not boil, but if I avoid the BBS and miss the announcement, I just *know* they'll be sold out by the time I find they were released. ::shudders:: See you in 3 days, and then 3 days after that, and again 3 more days, ad nauseum.
