reviving the old obd-II topic - 04/04/2004 06:40

I felt it was time to revive the topic of using the empeg to visualize obd-II data. There are now so many obd-II-RS232 converters around and maybe there's a new member on the board who has both the motivation and the skills to complete such a project?

I for one have a converter (from http://obd-2.com ) and would only need a little piece of software that gives me a choice over which of the parameters I'd like to display.

Here are links to threads with some of the relevant details:

Anybody interested?

Trying to get somebody else to write the software will leave you waiting a very long time. The only way to get this done quickly would probably be to pay someone to do it. I seriously doubt anyone will step forward to write this for you anytime soon. There are dozens of projects which have stalled at this point in the past, i'd recommend you start learning C.

If I could just find the right E36 M3 I'm looking for, you'd have OBD2 in a flash.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple (still justifying the outlay and need to rid myself of the blue car to the left)...

If you bought a converter for a programmer you might be able to get some progress (hint hint)... I looked at this site though and it looks like obd-2.com isn't accepting orders anymore. I don't know how compatabile other converters would be with yours so I'm not sure how anyone else could write software for this converter (since they can't get it).

It says on their site that they are on spring break until April 12th.

I'm doing something similar right now, but I'm using some manufacturer specific protocols, not the actual OBD-II stuff. But I should get around to looking into OBD-II... eventually. It shouldn't be that hard, like you say just need to know where to find the data you want.

If someone solders me the cable for my Ford Puma and my ELM chips I could finish this up pretty soon.

The code is running right now,
but I'm inputing the data via a null-modem-cable and miniterm.

My left hand is still a little numb, so soldering myself isn't an option right now and won't be for at least 3-4 more month.
