v3 Alpha?

v3 Alpha? - 03/07/2004 15:49

Hi,
I was about to downgrade my empeg to v2 from v3a7, when i came across car2-developer-v3.00-rv20040630.upgrade over at /v3alpha

Figured I’d let you guys know something new is in our magic hidden folder. I'm upgrading right now, hopefully my music doesn't disappear!

Happy 4th!

EDIT: It appears that on the 'track' display is inverted. What used to be black, is now bright white. kinda interesting.

Got it! Now, I think I'll wait for some braver tester than me...

It's there for testing, mainly because it doesn't work. Apart from extra bugs, like the white background thing, it's unlikely to offer any noticeable differences from alpha 7.

With a7 in my car, my drives would stay spinning 24/7, even after I shut my ignition of, I could still hear my drives at max rpm for minutes on end.

At least on AC with this build, my drives aren't spinning, and the caching seems to be functioning a bit, I do have a W on the screen at all times now

I think I’ll just leave the Casualty visual on the screen, and try and forget about track mode for this build

Are you dead sure that was 7? That sounds like a bug in 5 which was fixed in 7.

Yea, I’m positive it was 7, I’ve been running it for about 4 months or so.

Peter, if Rob hasn't been into the office since he sent me that buld on Friday, go over to his desk and look at his ICQ messenger (assuming his screen is not password protected), which I think is sitting idle at the moment but should have several messages from me on it regarding this build...

I'm not in the office, but might pop in tomorrow.

I'm sure there used to be an car-alpha list and site for that sort of build in the old days

It's more fun to just have a folder where one day a random alpha build appears. It adds some excitement into an otherwise routine day.

Please don't distribute that further.

In the "it will eat my player" sense?

Re: v3 Alpha? - 04/07/2004 18:14

Or perhaps in a "wait until the semi-tested Amersfoort release" sense...

Re: v3 Alpha? - 04/07/2004 20:28

But I won't be there, so that's not overly helpful, if the release ends up one of those "don't give it away" things again.

I'm tragically overdue to do some empeg software development. Maybe I'll wait until after Amersfoort. I still want to finish tunermon. And I still haven't found a useful way to do auto routing in gpsapp.

Wouldn't risk it if I were you - that looks like an unfinished internal build.

Hang on though, it's the empeg User's Meet in a few days time - I wonder???

It's like I can predict the future.

I wonder where I downloaded 20040630 to.

Re: v3 Alpha? - 11/07/2004 17:17

I actually just re-flashed 2.0 final. That build did run alot better than v3a7, but i just couldn't deal with the white track details screen. I really wonder if that build supports extra memory, i don't have any modified empegs yet to test that theory.

Re: v3 Alpha? - 11/07/2004 18:37

No, it doesn't - but the new releases we got at Amersfoort do

New releases

Hmm. v2.01 and v3a8? Or two different versions of v3a? Or is there a v4a? Much confusion for those of us stuck here.

Unless there was one release for the car player and pre-announced propaganda for some other products that are not available yet... You can never tell, and things have been a little too quiet from empeg towers recently...

Re: v3 Alpha? - 11/07/2004 19:12

Yes, the silence has been deafening. I've pinged both Rob and Hugo fairly recently without a response, so they must be up to something. I can't believe that Karma support has kept them that busy.

Time to start rumors...

60GB Karma?
Video player?
New car player?
Karma car dock 'done right'?
Receiver replacement?

Re: v3 Alpha? - 12/07/2004 09:53

THREE new releases. All of which support tons of extra memory. And each of which then has it's own particulars in addition. Time for me to code up a player selector menu in Hijack, I believe.

Re: v3 Alpha? - 12/07/2004 09:56

One other useful tidbit is that MORE MEMORY (with or without player support) should make database syncs more reliable with large (or possibly weird) playlists.

Will these new builds ever become avaliable to the rest of us?

At the very least we're going to wait in case the Amersfoort diaspora, now wending their way home across the planet, find any paper-bag bugs. But yes, eventually these builds (or newer ones still, with the same features) should become public alphas.

Do the new super-secret builds address the problem where playlists aren't saved to disk until several minutes after they are selected? That's probably the biggest thorn in my side right now.

Also, any changes to the dynamic data partition that might affect user apps which are reading it?
