Don't worry, I'll contact up to 15,000 on Monday.

In fact, I'm feeling so generous, anyone that has a number up to (and including) 15,000 can go ahead and order whenever they're ready. I still won't process your order until Monday though, but at least you'll have the satisfaction of having placed it!

I read this last night and I thought OK, I can order now but why rush? Let's ask Rob if the panels with AR coating are shipping yet and if not maybe delay my order for a while. I've waited a few months, I can wait a bit longer, right?

Right. I placed an order first thing today.

Another 450 players will ship before we get the AR coated panels.

I'm going to sell replacement panels very cheaply (not much more than the cost of postage) to existing owners, so don't worry too much about that.

Hmmm...Would it be possible to order the replacement panels with AR-coating in a different colour then? What timeframe do you think is possible? Or do you speak of something different than I'm thinking?

By the way - I received the correct serial cable last week, friday. Really good customers support

Will we be able to order more than one (different colors) at the special price?

Re: Order Invitation at 14500... figures... - 05/09/2000 08:26

Well, I got my invitation to order. My wife and I did a lot of talking. We are both very excited about the empeg car.

I'm a sad boy today because we've made the decision to delay buying the empeg. The mad irony of it is that, if I had been invited to order a few weeks ago I would have bought it (and might have found my ass in a financial mess).

As it stands, I can only afford the empeg by going into debt for the full amount, and then not have enough to afford an amp or the install. I decided that it would be pointless to buy the empeg if I'm not able to put it in my car for several months.

This really sucks. My sorries go to empeg, cuz it would be money in their hands right now if I could. Oh well, you'll get it in several months. It also sucks cuz I was really looking forward to developing stuff for it, which will now have to wait a little longer, so there go some more sorries to everyone else .

It sucks more when you've been hyped for months, losing sleep over waiting for your number to come up, and then find it was all for nothing .

Lend me your sympathies!

Hmm... Individual financial situations vary, but I don't think there's that much risk in ordering now. It's a big hit at first, but if you turn around a couple months from now and decide you can't afford it, you can sell for almost what you paid for it. Demand is obviously higher than supply and it seems that will remain for at least a little while.

As for an amp, I purchased a Kenwood head unit (~$200.) I'm going to feed the Empeg through its AUX in. The speakers will remain factory, and I'm not going to bother with an amplifier for now. My Empeg just shipped yesterday, so my mouth is watering.

You certainly do have my sympathy, as long as you give me yours in a few months when you buy an Empeg for half of what I'm paying now. :)

I dunno, Kureg... Despite what my evil twin told you, remember that the Empeg is more or less a toy. An incredibly cool toy, yes, but not cool enough to overextend your credit. You've been on this BBS for months, salivating over the Empeg. During that time, weren't you saving up for it? If you were unable to save up for it then, how do you expect to make payments now?

(Rob: Sorry if I sound like I'm trying to talk the guy out of a sale. I just don't want to see someone regretting the purchase for reasons unrelated to the product's quality.)

Was I saving up for it? Yes and no. I've been saving up for it, but it's been in the form of making payments on the credit card so there would be enough room for the empeg .

Now there is enough room for it, but not quite enough for an amp at the same time. The second problem is that my wife and I have made the concious agreement that we want to revert to our original credit card plan (save room for emergencies, like, if the car were to suddenly explode) and continue to keep paying it off instead of putting more back on there.

Basically, the decision is pending on how much we get back from the insurance company as a result of some recent expenditures on things like dental work and chiropractic work, all of which are covered by our benefits. Which is the reason for the power budgeting .

The short form is, how much do I have to bend reality to justify getting the empeg now . I have a good hold on reality. If it's going to be too hard to handle I'll definately delay buying an empeg. You can't tell me that you wouldn't sit there looking for ways to make it work (just so long as they are practical and reasonable ways to make it work). I'm more worried that when I finally can afford an empeg, there won't be one available to buy (just like what happened with the Mark 1).

Yes, I agree -- don't overextend your credit. I wasn't suggesting that. I was just pointing out that if it turns out that it doesn't fit into the budget, it's remarkably easy to find someone to take it off your hands at very close to what you paid for it. Of course just like the stock markets, that's not a guarantee. I have figured out that I can squeeze it into my budget, and pay it off in a reasonable amount of time. If some tragedy strikes, I'm relatively confident that I won't take a bath on it.

And by the way, are first names primary keys for this BBS?

Yes, I agree -- don't overextend your credit.

Darn, I was hoping you'd fall into the evil twin role. We could have been like the little angel and devil sitting on Kureg's shoulders:
"You know you want it."
"But doesn't your wife want jewelry for her birthday?"
"Come on, it's awesome. You won't regret it."
"You'll be in debt for the rest of your life."
"Debt, schmedt. You can just pay the minimum on the credit card."
(etc.)

And by the way, are first names primary keys for this BBS?

Yes, and I was here first. So get lost.

Yes, there are definitely more important things. It's like this:

1) Air
2) Water
3) Food
4) Shelter
5) Empeg

Actually depending on your climate, the Empeg may jump ahead of shelter to #4.

you forgot to add some amps and speakers. without them empeg wouldn'd be that good. so they would be directly on place 4 or 5 before the empeg

Re: Order Invitation at 14500... figures... - 11/09/2000 20:30

Kureg, I offered this to another person who was in a similar financial situation but never responded, but here goes...

I'd be happy to switch numbers with you! I'm #15154. Rob can verify. That way, I (who have saved money up for it and am willing to buy NOW and can't seem to take this torture of the slowdown between calling folks in as we get closer - I understand the higher take rate, but still!) can buy now and you can continue to think about it and discuss with your wife. I already have amp installed and am just waiting for the magical email!

According to Rob, all queued folks would be reached by end of September (hopefully that hasn't changed), but I just can't wait! Let me know if you are interested!

Heck if the target for my number has slipped into October, I may even be willing to buy you an extra Car Mount or Color Panel (your choice) to switch numbers with me!

If you order with someone elses registration number and the order isn't billed to that person, the sales system will automatically reject it.

We made a decision right at the start that registration numbers were not to become trading commodities.

Re: Order Invitation at 14500... figures... - 12/09/2000 08:34

Hopefully, yes, as long as the fuel blockades don't affect shipping. I've just heard that FedEx in our area are likely to run out of diesel by the end of the week, but hopefully this will be short term. In any case we can switch to TNT who have their own tanks.

Re: Order Invitation at 14500... figures... - 13/09/2000 18:35

I'm postponing further invitations partly because there seem to be some production glitches at the moment (I believe the functional test rig has been playing up over the last couple of days, but it should be fixed very soon) and partly because we need to see what happens with the fuel shortage here.

If both of those problems are fixed by Monday I'll send out some more invitations then (probably 250 of them).

Bare with us on this. A new sales processing guy (Andrew) started today and I'm trying to train him up without totally dropping him in the deep end. Once he's up to speed he's going to make a big difference to our sales processing efficiency.

I'll send the invites tomorrow evening and drop him in the deep end on Wednesday instead

Re: Order Invitation at 14500... figures... - 18/09/2000 16:30

The period since the last invitation has been rather long for two reasons:

1. The takeup rate is increasing - we're still getting lots of orders and it's been two weeks or more since invitations were sent

2. Production glitched between batches, and we've received very few players in the last two weeks. Stocks are very low and it would be pointless inviting more orders until we're sure we can ship them. Supply should be back to normal by the end of the week.
