Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 20/10/2004 17:29

The New Alpine Top of the line BadA$$ MM station (not the f series cause that price is just insane) is about 2300.00 just for laughs and grins if all the people here helped out with what they can do you think a
Color Touch Screen Empeg system could be built with the following features.

1. Empegs Kick butt interface
2. wi-fi, blue tooth Ethernet
3. Color
4. Touch Screen
5 Dual Drive bays (on a carrier so you don't have to take the unit apart to upgrade them)
6. Usb2 fireware
7. Prolux Visuals
8. Front, rear and Sub 4 or 8 volt outputs
9. Nice EQ with time corrections

Unit cost under 2500 each production cost 100000??

In honor of dead horses and such, I've added a new FAQ entry on this subject.

Following the links to the Visteon discussion, robricc's post with images has stale links.
Post here.

Cool, we skipped "empeg 3" and went directly to empeg 4; do not pass go, do not collect $200?? So, years from now, we'll talk about the missing "empeg 3" like people currently ask about IPv5, DOS 4, Winamp 4, and Microsoft Word 5.

I'm tellin' ya' man, bluetooth box under the seat to interface with Karma / iPod / Nomad using a common UI and a freely mountable (non-touch-screen) display. I'll put the money into that any day.

The problem with a streaming solution is that you need way more tech duplication in the basestation (receiver-like) device. Having a unit that accepted a directly connected portable would allow you to use that portable's own processing power/software to do what it already does all the time, saving most of the duplication. The simpler device would only need to patch into the inputs and outputs to control the portable and allow audio connection to the amplification system.

But it's still a nice idea. Especially since it would be easier to standardize and if adopted would have a chance of working with portables of all shapes and sizes. The only way I see this happening is if Apple adds bluetooth or WiFi to the iPod as a catalyst.

As an aside (considering this thread isn't likely to spark the mk4 anytime soon...) Anyone going to CES in January? I'll be there one way or another but have yet to make the travel plans and hotel reservations. I've also got to set up an itinerary to make sure I see at least all the prerequisite booths on my "hit-list"

I'll likely be there with a couple friends, but we haven't really done much planning yet.

Except that DOS4 (also MS-DOS 4.01) and Word 5 (for DOS and Mac) actually did exist.

Re: Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 22/10/2004 16:50

And wasn't WinAMP 4 the one that had the library built in that everyone hated so they scrapped it?

Re: Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 22/10/2004 17:03

IPv5 also existed, just never saw much use. I think most of it just got tacked on to IPv4 instead of changing over completly.

Winamp 4 did get skipped. Their logic is Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5. Everyone hated how Winamp 3 worked for some reason.

No, that was Winamp3. It sucked so badly they just skipped 4 entirely iirc.

Re: Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 23/10/2004 01:27

I remember reading that DOS4 article a while back, which is why I mentioned it. I always thought the protected mode thing "DOS4GW" needed for Doom had something to do with DOS4. Actually, I didn't "always" think that, only recently.

So there was IPv5? Maybe it was IPv3 that was skipped. One of them was "reserved" for testing or something.

And yes, Winamp 3 was so bloated it seemed like an entire OS as a media player. As I always say, Winamp 1.55 forever.

dont you stick to Win95, too?

No, AFAIK: DOS4GW = DOS (DOS), 4G (as in lots of memory), W (Watcom).

Which reminds me of a small anecdote:

Way back when, while I was still playing GTA on DOS, I upgraded the RAM in my PC from 64Mb to 128Mb, and it stopped working. After some poking around, I found an upgrade for DOS4GW that said "now supports 128Mb of virtual memory". I got in touch, but unfortunately, it was an upgrade to the SDK -- not something that users could install. I also said to them: "Yeah, 128Mb of virtual memory; what about 128Mb of physical memory?" "Ah," came the reply, "We didn't think of that."

Re: Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 23/10/2004 14:23

AFAIK, IPv4 was the first publicly presented IP specification. I suppose it's possible that DARPA implemented an earlier version at some point.

From RFC 791:
Quote:
The Version field indicates the format of the internet header. This document describes version 4.

Re: Empeg 4 ?? Just a question - 24/10/2004 10:09

I'd also heard that there was a trojan horse going around as WinAmp 4 at one stage, so they skipped that number to avoid confusion. But the WinAmp web site FAQ doesn't mention this.

Oh well, so much for memory.

Kinda like the old legend "don't trust any version of PKZip above 2.04g because it's a virus." Ah Phil Katz, you have left your mark on computing forever..... or something. (darn, and I had a good URL to paste too, but it's long since expired and replaced by seequ...)
