Empeg Bulletin Board search function - 23/10/2004 22:23

I can't get the search function for this bulletin board to work. Using quotes or "+" doesn't find things i know are in posts. anyone else have this problem? For example "alpha 8" only has one hit. "alpha 9" doesn't even return Rob's original post about v3.00 alpha 9. What am i doing wrong?

Did you change the date range of posts to search? To search everything, just set the units field to the blank setting.

Yeah, Bitt's right. The usual problem is that it defaults to searching only the last few days' worth of posts.

This is the most irritating and useless misfeature of any software I can think of.

Tom, PLEASE PLEASE edit that so it defaults to all posts. Because UBB chooses to put it in that way by default, I think you'll need to re-edit it each time you upgrade the BBS.

Yet please allow date range to be selected to override the (hopefully to be implemented) default of "all posts". I actually used the "no newer than 2 years" to quickly find an old post. Yea, I finally know how to search. Now I just need to learn simple arithmetic and proper use of vowels and double letters. I'll graduate 2nd grade one of these days...

If I could have you sit by my side in my office to see the software I am forced to use 8--10 hours a day every day, I am quite sure I could change your opinion about that!

Search can put quite a high load on a box, so the default is suppost to at least try and make users think about what they are searching for. It's not a huge concern with this site currently, but the box is seeing more use from other sites again so it's always good to make sure this site is a well behaving member of the machine.

I will however change it to a higher reasonable value when I get things updated to 6.5 final.
