Interview on Radio 4... erk! - 19/11/2004 21:59

Yesterday I did an interview about the mp3mobile & empeg-car with Radio 4's You & Yours programme - who were asking why, given that car mp3 players have been around a while now, nobody knows about them and instead everyone is still struggling to get their iPods to work in-car.

Not sure when it'll be broadcast, but they said sometime in the next couple of weeks. You can listen to previous features at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4

<cynic>
I have absolutely no idea what I ended up saying, but it's probably largely irrelevant as they'll edit it to fit their angle anyway

The researcher contacted pretty much everyone, from most of Rio UK through to Patrick and even Franc Buxton (who did the mp3mobile metalwork) before getting hold of me. I think, just maybe, my spam filters are a little over-zealous...

Yay! Mainstream publicity! Pity it's 6 years late, but I guess it's still better late than never

Where did they do the interview? A lot of You and Yours is done in Manchester just down the corridor from me.

You were on Sky News in 1998.. that's probably when the BBC started trying to contact you.

It must be empeg's month for promos

Check out my article in the latest issue of smartimes magazine, I give it mention in the first couple of paragraphs, it is a 4 page photo spread about my Euro trip this summer

I will scan the article in if anyone is interested, it is only a very brief mention and a link to www.empeg.com.

Cheers

Cris.

I went into the Cambridge studio and sat in a small uninspiring room talking into a 1950's microphone with the researcher, who was in London. Lots of the stuff looked very homebrew ISDN

Probably SSI apt-x systems for stereo compression at 44.1k. Always did look home brew, but damned effective. Worked on the datasheets for the researcher at Queens when I was doing my M.Sc.

<nerd hat>
If it's BBC (which it is) it'll be an old CDQ G.722/Musicam coder and a BBC Radio Projects mixer.

Apt.X is popular in radio outside the BBC, but for some reason the BBC never used it until recently. Almost all Radio 1 OB's now go over ISDN using SystemBase codecs. Apt.X sounds good, has low latency but is locked in hardware, which makes it expensive.
