HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 16:00

I have just installed a new Seagate 100 GB HD and for starters I really don't know how to save the hyperterminal profile as an .ht file on the hard disk. I was able to see the text scroll down the hyperterminal screen and the last line of text reads as this: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05 and this is as far as I can get. My keyboard commands do not work even after unplugging the player and pluging it in again. Once the commands work should my next move to get the Disk Builder utility upgrade?

Are you aware of the Drive Upgrade guide? If not, go read that first.

If so, is the new one the only drive? If so, you'll definitely have to run the disk builder. It'required before you can install any software or music.

If it's a secondary drive, did you set the jumper(s) correctly? Check the old drive, too.

I was going step by step with the Drive Upgrade section and it is the only HD. Actually on a whim I unplugged the player ran the disk builder plugged the player in and started hyper all over again and it is currently doing a disk stress-testing loop.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 16:43

The stress test is an infinite loop. Reboot the player, and capture and post the boot to a file with hyperterminal. The player should work at this point, but it would not hurt to see the boot results.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 16:59

Paul thanks I did just that and I upgraded the player software and I now see "end of playlist" on the screen so it looks like it worked. Now I'm going to put some music on it and hopefully I did everything correctly!

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 17:18

It sounds like everything worked well. It was probably a brand new hard drive - the builder would have asked for a keystroke if it had been already been "built". Try putting a test track or two on. If that works, you are ok. If you run into trouble you might need to rerun the builder a second time (known bug / glitch).

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 17:25

My only problem now is I have upgraded Emplode with the USB drivers and it constanly shuts down. It loads and shuts right down.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 17:38

The player is up and running? Emplode is shutting down immediately on loading? Crashing?

Ok... Hmmm... You ran the builder code. Did you run the upgrade file afterward to load the player? Your last message gave that impression (end of playlist). If so, do you have the developer version and can you take a boot log of the player? I just want to eliminate that as a problem.

The version of emplode and the player software need to match, but if emplode is crashing immediately, that implies a different kind of problem (bad drivers, possibly need to reinstall emplode).

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 17:47

I would uninstall emplode and then re-install with 2.10 which matches the player firmware 2.0 Final. BEFORE trying to use USB to connect with the player, first re-blow 2.0 onto the player with the upgrader over serial. THEN install the USB driver for XP (make sure you use the right one) using the instructions in the README. Without starting up emplode, plug in the player to USB and then power it up. Let it be recognised. When it's recognised, go check the hardware list in the system applet on the control panel to see if it's functioning properly. Finally, start up emplode. While it is starting up the initial search, clcik on OPTIONS. Configure it for serial and USB only initially, even if you want to later connect over ethernet.

Can someone tell me how to wipe the new hard drive clean I think I may have done something wrong and I would like to start over from the beginning.

The "Builder" image will do that for you.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 20:51

OK, when I run Emplode all that comes up is the select player window and the flashlight never stops. I must have done something wrong. On the player all I see right now is "drivers wanted and a V W symbol. When I unplug the player and plug it back in it says Rio and goes right to the V W symbol. Can someone help a DUMBASS out? I don't know what I did but I'm P.O. at myself!!!!

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 20:56

Get a boot log and post it here. Start up hyperterminal, click Transfer->Capture Text and enter a filename you can find later. Then apply power to the empeg. After it's done, click Transfer->Capture Text->Stop. Then post that file here.

Tony, you may want to add how to capture a boot log to the FAQ.

Yeah, I think it says you copy and paste, but that XP version of hyperterminal screws up copy and paste, so I'll put in the capture thing.

I may sound stupid on here but can you tell me how to do a boot log so I can post it. To all those who are helping THANK YOU!!!!!!

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 21:12

You need to turn the capture option of hyperterminal on (menu option "Transfer" and "capture text") saving this to a local file. You then need to attach this file to your posting.

I suspect that you may need to rerun the builder, reinstall the player software and perhaps wipe out the boot animation. Not a difficult thing, step by step...

I ran the builder image just before I ran hyperterminal and those were the results that you see above. What should my next move be?

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 21:29

Did you reapply actual player software?
Posted by: Gallagher419

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 21:45

Should I just install the player software without having to run hyperterminal again?
Posted by: wfaulk

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 22:26

You shouldn't need to run Hyperterminal again unless something else goes wrong. In fact, if you leave it running, it may interfere with the software upload process.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 22:26

Yes.

I have just realised what you said earlier - you have gone to a 100M disk.

The builder doesn't work correctly for this size disk. I recall the symptoms you are now describing happened to me twice this summer on 80G disks.

What you have to do is install the developer version after the builder has run on the disk, then read the article by Roger Lipscombe on his home page (I forget where it is now - www.differentpla.net?). You then manually chop up the disk some more, then blow the normal 2.0 consumer final.

This is complex. If you are already having trouble upgrading at the moment, you might not be able to handle this yourself without help, and a lot of patience on your part. You VERY definitely need to keep your cool while doing it.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 23:01

Ok I see then I'm not as dumb as I think! I'm in the process of downloading the developer version right now. If all else fails I will install the original 10GB HD then eventually send the player to Eutronix and have them take care of that pesky 100 for me. Thanks!

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 23:52

One thing I don't understand is at one point I had the hard drive working correctly because I had an "end of playlist" message on the player. The problem didn't start until I started Emplode and tried to use the USB port and it kept shutting Emplode down. Now as a result of that I have a "Drivers Wanted" message. I don't understand why the player goes to that message every time it powers up. I'm thinking that if I would have used the serial port instead of the USB I might not be having this problem.

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 23:53

Hm, that's what I thought. It brought to mind all the talk of "a new builder image."

But this happens for 80 gig disks also? I added an 80 gig along side a 30 gig, used the standard builder, old Emplode with 1.03 developer software. Everything seemed to work just fine.

Sure, I haven't filled the 80 gig so I don't know it's 100% good, but does the current builder not make a big enough partition or something? Will I see this as a problem eventually (even though Emplode reports the correct free space size)? Sorry for the thread hijack; can we consider it a "supplementary"?

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 06/01/2005 23:56

I now have this message on the player
Builder image
Drive(s) appear to be already built

what is my next step?

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 07/01/2005 00:52

I have acheived success. I ran the disk builder a few times then put the player softwear on it and wallah! I now have a 100GB HD. Thanks to all who offered their help!

Re: HD Upgrade Can't Communicate With Player - 07/01/2005 00:54

I managed to use the old builder this summer on my Mk2a with an 80gb drive, but I do remember so odd errors that seemed to work themselves out. Maybe we finally need to get on with that new builder!
