While I'm at work I have my empeg connected to our ethernet network. There's nothing stopping any of my coworkers from running emplode and deleting all my music while I'm looking the other way. Now, they wouldn't do that, of course, but still...

Are there any plans to secure the empeg in any way?

Yes, this has been brought up by some others, and the guys@empeg said they are working on it, either via passcode or some other means.

If you need an immediate solution, you could add another ethernet card (they're just so cheap) to you work PC, if they would let you. Plug the empeg directly into the new NIC with a crossover cable and only your computer would have access to the empeg.

Yeah, all I need is a SPARC/Solaris version of Empode. No, it doesn't compile, and I don't have time or the patience to port it.

Maybe I'm lost, but what does that have to do with this thread, or my last post?

I guess his work "PC" is a SPARC/Solaris box. If we have a bunch of those here too. I occasionally try to get people to install SPARC Linux on them

Yes, that works. I'm not terribly concerned, though, since I can easily upload things again. I even got our IT department to register empeg.mycompany.com for me.

Off topic: What is a cross over cable? Is it a cable that lets you connect a device directly without using a hub?

In the context of Ethernet, yes. Here is a site with a nice wiring diagram:

Serial cables also come in two flavours - a normal cable connects a computer to a modem, a null-modem cable connects two computers. The empeg comes with a null-modem cable.

Correct. It's the ethernet equivalent of a null-modem cable.

I made my own crossover cable from a regular cable when I first got my Mark 2. I had a 10/100 ethernet card but my hub is 100MB only. It works perfect.
