Donations for the operating cost of the servers (discussion) - 04/10/2005 17:24

With tomorrows server move comes a change in how the web hosting is being done. For the past eight years, Vito has been paying for the servers I have used for many of the things I have had hosted, including this BBS and also the RioCar.org site. At this point, it is not feasable for Vito to be the only person to bear the brunt of the bill. Thus, he has set up a reoccuring subscription system via PayPal to help pay for the server costs. Right now, about 73% of the costs are being covered already by this method from other people hosting content here. So, I am going to open this up to the members here.

This is completly voluntary, and for now there is no critical amount that needs to be donated to keep things running. Please do not feel pressured or obligated to do this, as I am sure things could be moved to someone elses hosting solution for free as well. I'll keep this thread updated with a running total of how much of the cost is covered as it changes,

The subscription links are available at http://nathan.perilith.com/~vito/.donation.html

*edit* cloning this info over to Announcements, use this thread for any discussion about it.

Move to Announcements so we don't burry this thread, perhaps? Or just bump it monthly?

But, please: not sticky -- we already have too many of those (IMO).

It seems like most people don't like the stickies. I suggest a feature to hide stickies which could be tied to the unread thread/posts counter so the sticky would re-appear if it received another post or maybe just un-stick them so they show in the correct place by timestamp would be the easiest. We might even be able to drum up some extra donations for a feature along these lines

Anyways, it's just a thought...

You know those two lines at the top of the page? The ones that say
Quote:
Quick Links: Empeg FAQ | Latest Software | RioCar.Org | Hijack | jEmplode | emphatic
Repairs: Repairs | Addons: Home Docks | Sleds | Lenses | Buttons | Eutronix | Tuners

I betcha another one could be added: BBS Donation

That's my $0.02.
Well, that's my idea, anyway. My $0.02 will come later via paypal.

My two cents would be that the ability to do a one time donation would probably be more effective than that subscription deal. I've got enough monthly bills already.

one time donation

Agreed. One time donation for the amount of our choice. Then you could bump this thread every 6 months or year to remind us about it. Kind of like public television without all the friendly phone operators.

Maybe I'm being thick here, but I certainly want to ensure the future of the BBS, if 73% is covered, what sum is involved in coming up with the other 27% per week, month, year? - whichever criteria is appropriate.
