Update on final memory board situation

Update on final memory board situation - 20/10/2005 12:02

Hi.

I just realised this is the first time in about 3 weeks I've even looked at the BBS, due to life, etc. Anyway, slightly unexpectedly, the memory I have been waiting for ages for suddenly turned up yesterday. So, it's going off the the PCB builders along with the remaining PCBs, and they claim by the middle of november I will have 36 built boards in my hands. I will then be able to sent them out to all the people who have waited so patiently for the things, along with a couple of extras if there is any interest. Note that this is likely to be the last batch of memory boards I make, as to be honest it'sturned out to be too much hassle to sort out, and I simply don't have the time for the forseeable future to do something like this again.

Once again, my apologies to everyone for the whole debacle, it's taken far too long to get everyone's boards sorted. On the upside, I have only had one refund request, so thanks for the patience.

Any word from the empeg guys if a beta or something will come along that will actually work with the thing? I can only get 2.00 to run with it. 2.01 is a mess with the memory board. I know that they couldn't test the software with the board because the board wasn't developed yet, but I wanted to see if you knew if that was going to change.

I think, in all honesty, given the takeover from SigmaTel, you can really forget the prospect of ever seeing another player release. Shame, but that's it.

Any memory boards left? I am interested!

Quite possibly, given the IP cleansing; the main issue is that we no longer have rights to an MP3 decoder to run on the StrongARM - Sigmatel have a lovely one that's much more efficient than the one we use, but it won't run on an ARMv4 (needs a v5TE) and is licensed only for their CPUs.

Still, people have said "no more!" before now and been proved wrong

..but you're not selling any new products. You already bought all the MP3 decoder licenses necessary for the entire empeg user base. How does having that binary library (of which you bought X thousand licenses) in a branch of your repository cause IP pollution?

As I understand it, the MP3 codec license transferred to DNNA. Then, when Sigmatel bought Rio from DNNA, the license didn't transfer. So, unless I misunderstand something, the MP3 codec license in question still belongs to DNNA, and Sigmatel can't use it.

Just out of curiosity, how's the attempt at being able to release PDFs of the schematics going?

That's not a problem -- we already have the binary mp3 decoder .so on our players. No need to keep redistributing that part!

I'd also be interested in one if there are any available.

And some of us would be totally happy with Ogg/FLAC-only...

My entire collection exists as FLACs now anyway, and I've got all OGGs on the Karma. I'd be quite happy to do away with MP3....

That's pretty much the size of it, yes. Though, obviously, given that the carplayer has plenty of CPU and no particular power budget, libmad could easily be used instead, so that's not the biggest issue.

Anyone fancy a 2.6 kernel port?

Libmad is GPL. Otherwise we'd have been using it instead of the ARM decoder anyway.

Maybe we could put it in the kernel... /dev/mp3 anyone?

Hmmm, this discussion seems to start heading in a good direction....

The batch of 38 boards has just (finally) turned up. I will be inspecting them and preparing them for shipment over the weekend, and will send them out on Monday.

I will be emailing everyone who ordered and paid for one to check they still need them, or want a refund. Any left over will be offered to anyone who has so far placed an order on a first-come first-served basis. If there are any left after that I will post a note here.
