HDD Based Portable MP3 Player

Hey,

I'm tempted to pickup the creative jukebox, but was wondering if Empeg/Rio might have something brewing in the months ahead? The last thing I want is to pick one up and for Empeg to announce something 2 months later...

ps - if not, which one would everyone recommend, the compaq solution, creative labs solution, or Neo solution?

I read somewhere that the creative one doesnt sound all that good and that there are some problems with it. The creative thing was discussed somewhere else on the board - maybe in the review section.

Hey, this is Dionysus we're talking about. If he wants a portable, he's got very good reasons for it. I'd think the Empeg isn't easy to strap to your belt and take for a walk in the park running on battery power. Some people actually spend time outdoors (can't imagine why, though).

Now that I think about it, Di does a lot of flying. A portable would be a good thing to have on a flight from California to Florida and back.

And anyway, I'm sure Dionysus read the other threads on the Creative Labs product and the other products. He's asking for comparative opinions from folks who have tried these products.

Oh, and just possibly, he's fishing for hints from Hugo. So, Hugo, gonna take the bait?

(My personal opinion is that one of the reasons S3 bought Empeg is so they could move into that market, and the next thing we'll see coming out of S3 will be a hard-disk portable running Empeg's software.)

Mostly portability, I think. I'd like to have a HDD-based player with at least some of the features of the empeg-car that I could easily take on an airplane, in a friends car, on a camping trip, or anywhere else I want music but not to be worried about damaging my ~1K car stereo, with or without it's cool carrying case.

It is well known that SONICblue have big plans for the Rio range (home network and automotive products being two such additions), however there's not a chance that we can talk about forthcoming products before their official announcement.

The same would have been true when we were independent - it's best not to hand such information to your competitors unless you can gain a commercial advantage in doing so.

Right - also I'm expecting quite a bit of airplane travel in my new job (in the San Fran area, btw) - Empeg's not really that nice to carry as a carry-on:)

I have the PJB100 with a 20 GB drive.

I highly recommend it.
I love it.
Its pricy though.

Check my forum at http://www.e-groups.com/list/pjb100 if you are interested what others have to say about it. Developers/rsellers attend that list as well. It became the 'unoffical' PJB forum in the end. Like this board is for the EMPEG.

How about the NEO25 ? I am also trying to justify the expense - how about I upgrade the drive in my empeg, then I suddenly have a spare 2.5" drive that I could put in a Neo25 that I buy without a HD ( 279usd ).

If the battery life is OK for you thats probably a good choice. Check the above forum for discussions about the neo as well as the mp3.com hardware board.

doesnt the pjb only come with a 6gb. where are the directions for doing the hard drive?

Check the above forum, there are detailed instructions. It's just a drive change, for a particular Toshiba model. There will a an 'official' 20GB PJB avail end of this year.

Get a PJB100, do the 20GB upgrade (or wait for the 20GB version), and you will be happy. I have one (and an empeg) and I'm quite pleased with it.

Says who? I admit I don't follow the egroups forum religiously, but last time I checked, there was no confirmation that there would be an official one.

So, now that the Rio BoomBox is shown in the latest Wired magazine, can you say if it's built off empeg technology?

(For those without access to the magazine, the newest issue shows the player as a $300 8gb player that looks like a foldable boombox that can be powered by a few D batteries for 10 hours. Not much more then that, and nothing on the Rio page.)

This product hasn't yet been officially launched, so I think we'll have to wait for a detailed announcement before discussing any specifications.

Of course, the very way you say that you cannot discuss specifications implies a lot... Why else would empeg be familiar enough with the specs of the box to wait for a formal announcement?

We're familiar with pretty much everything forthcoming in the Rio range - whether or not we are developing it.

Either way, I think Rio kit has always been good so even products that were developed by other teams should be worth buying

I expected the next thing out of the gate to be a walkman-style unit similar to the PJB100. A D-cell-powered boom box is a great twist. Bravo.

What I want to know is, if it's not officially launched yet, how Wired knows about it and we don't?
