wireless networked bridge.. I already have one ? - 05/12/2000 19:23

i already have this one for our laptops http://www.smc.com/wireless/ . Do I just get another bridge, maybe this one, and plug it into my mk2 and its wireless? Or since I have this one is there a cheaper one that will work with this one?

Thanks

Alan

It doesn't look like there is a unit that plugs into an existing ethernet port. Unless you can track down a usb wireless ethernet adapter, but then you will have all sorts of fun getting it to work. I have seen a simple unit that connects to an existing ethernet port, I cant remember who but for some reason the Apple Airport jumps into my head, can anyone else verify this?

I'm also interested in wireless, but don't want a bridge in the car really.

Proxim's Symphony line has a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge. Just a box with an antenna and an RJ-45. I have the pre-HomeRF model and it worked well. At the other end you can use their PCMCIA or USB adapters. If you don't care about HRF compatibility there are also PCI and ISA adapters. These are all 1.6 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. http://www.proxim.com/symphony/products/hrf_gateway.shtml

I think a great idea would be if empeg designed a "wireless wiring harness", completed with wireless ethernet card already set up to connect with a docked empeg.

Of course, while this all sounds cool, and I know it's possible, I don't see all that much of a use. I use the empeg to play MP3s on my computer now, and it's not very hard to bring inside.

okie dokey.. I dont think empeg has to make anything. There is a product like that proxim already made. My thing is I already have a SMC residential gateway smc2052w. I just need to find something that works with this!

I too have the SMC Wireless system in my house. Call me lazy, (you're lazy!) but I'd rather update my empeg without pulling it out of the car. In a perfect world, it would support shared access and I could make it a node on the Internet. :)

As you may have read in another thread, we're demonstrating this at CES next month using an Airport 802.11 base station. This isn't a shipping commercial solution yet (although it's well within the abilities of many people here to install such a setup) but it does give rise to thought.

Personally, I'm looking forward to 3Gen mobile phones - things will start to get really interesting then!

Hmm.. it won't be until 2015 that US embraces it:(

Does your setup still involve having a wireless bridge ( and hub ? ) at the empeg end of the setup ?

Yes, the empeg doesn't have a built-in wireless transceiver. Our current demo uses an Apple airport (no need for a hub).

Does the Airport require power - if so what voltage ?

Rob, have you managed to work around the problem of the airport base station not talking to other base stations?

Nick.

The transformer for my Airport is putting out 12 Volts at 1.25 amps. I would assume DC, but it is not listed for some reason.

Hugo mentioned in another thread that it would actually run on anywhere between 8 and 40 volts (don't quote me on that, look it up as I am going based on a somewhat falty memory).
