Eide Hard drives? - 12/12/2021 08:23

Do Eide hard drives work in the empeg/Rio. While looking at some IDE 2.5" hard drives I have seen a few say they are Eide hard drives. It stands for Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics.

EIDE is IDE, except minus some DMA modes that the empeg doesn't care about.

It may work, but there could be trouble with the PIO timing -- some older EIDE drives need the host to poll for "ready" continuously during PIO data transfers.

Any drive that labels itself as "EIDE" is very likely more than 20yrs old at this point, and the lubricants inside the drive are likely to be beyond their design life. I wouldn't touch it myself.

EDIT: looked up the model number and that particular WD drive dates to 2004.

Thanks. I will just stick the good old IDE drives for now. Then switch to the CF cards.
